Daily Lessons from Life 18 April 2018 - Change of SMRT Group CEO...

"Outgoing CEO Desmond Kuek put SMRT 'in a stronger position': Chairman

SMRT now has some 30 sensors that allow engineering staff to keep track of MRT trains and trackside equipment such as signaling systems, power supply and railway tracks in real-time. Such devices enable more timely response and recovery of faults to minimise inconvenience to commuters.

Neo Kian Hong will succeed Desmond following a global search. He is currently the Permanent Secretary of Defence Development. Prior to this, he was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education from July 2013 to June 2017."

and

"Former defence chief Neo Kian Hong to replace Desmond Kuek as SMRT CEO

SINGAPORE: SMRT chief Desmond Kuek is stepping down and making way for senior civil servant and former chief of defence force Neo Kian Hong, the company confirmed on Wednesday (Apr 18).
The appointment will take effect on Aug 1."
Is this unexpected? Not really. Many wondered, without insights of watching Desmond in action on a daily basis, why he was not asked to go EARLIER? That seems to be tbe sentiment.
A brave word for the current Chairman to utter: After a GLOBAL search, X-Chief of Defense n x-PermSec of Education Development n current PermSec of Defence Development, WITHOUT ANY EXPERIENCE in public transportation industry, is the BEST person!
Many would want to be absolutely clear: Did he VOLUNTEERed?
Also, is he the BEST person or because NO ONE in this industry around the world WANTED this job? Maybe tne total pay package like Desmond's aren't attractive enough?
Whatever it is, Mr Ng, or does he like to be asdgressed as General (NS) Ng which even PM Lee at one time used?
Some writers said Desmond didn't do badly pay wise. He supposedly bagged more tha S$10m over 5 over years!! Not bad at all. Even better paid than our Ministers!!
Will b interesting to learn: a. where will Desmond go? some Board for some TLCs?; b. did he get any "sending off" bonus?
As for General (NS)/Mr Ng, prove to the people that our government is not blindly putting x-general n armed forces old boys to work as ministers or TLCs/GLCs/NTUCs companies as CEO! That the government TRULY know a talent when they hv one!!
All the best to the new SMRT Group CEO!!
ps: x-NTUC Income CEO Tan Kin Lian supposedly wrote an Open Letter to Ng on how to run SMRT successfully! Good luck!!
