Daily Lessons from Life 21 January 2018 - 1st responders' readiness

"Grassroots volunteers test first responder skills in terror exercise

SINGAPORE: Grassroots volunteers got a chance to test their skills in dealing with a terror attack, during an exercise held at the Geylang Serai Community Centre on Sunday (Jan 21).
The interfaith event involved emergency first responders from Geylang Serai’s Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC), as well as volunteers from various groups.
Speaking at the event, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC Fatimah Lateef stressed the importance of the role the public can play in such situations.
"As a community, you are the first responders - there’s a lot of things that you can do upfront," Associate Professor Fatimah said.
“Taking care of the nation is not just the job of the people with arms, people who are trained in the Home Team for example, people at our borders … it’s for everyone.”
The volunteers, who received tactical and first aid training from Sierra International, are trained to handle injuries typically seen during a terror attack, such as massive bleeding from gunshot wounds."
I m trained in CPR+AED abt 2 yrs ago. Not sure I know how to respond in a life n death situation now as I had no practices since passing that course. It is a disaster if I were called to action. A very unsatisfactory stage of affairs!
So this test, n I assumed after the 1st responders had passed the course n being certified, is a good way of keeping the life saving skill in tact. I would submit it should be tested at least 1/4ly if not monthly. Each community centre/club should hv a dummy for CPR+AED practices for certified volunteers to practice the drill! This is the key manner to keep the skill in tact!
Kudos to this initiative n hope my suggestion will be taken up by the authorities!!
May terrorist attacks never happened here even as we just read any the attack in Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul where innocent guests get killed by supposedly 5 Taliban terrorists!!
