"Internet giants told: Accept cyber curbs to be welcome in China

GENEVA: Google and Facebook will have to accept China's censorship and tough online laws if they want access to its 751 million internet users, Chinese regulators told a conference in Geneva on Monday.
Google and Facebook are blocked in China, along with Twitter Inc and most major Western news outlets.
"That’s a question maybe in many people’s minds, why Google, why Facebook are not yet working and operating in China," said Qi Xiaoxia, director general of the Bureau of International Cooperation at the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).
In Google's case, it left China of its own accord in 2010.
"If they want to come back, we welcome," Qi told the Internet Governance Forum at the U.N.'s European headquarters.
"The condition is that they have to abide by Chinese law and regulations. That is the bottom line. And also that they would not do any harm to Chinese national security and national consumers’ interests.""
At least they r telling it as it is! No beating around the bush!! A bit uncouth yet sincere n candid points made!!
When Google left China in 2010, it won a lot of respect fr me. It hired the x-Microsoft Chinese icon among the young Chinese IT or ICT industry then. Yet, it could not reconcile its value's of "do no evil" n no censorship n other restrictions of privacy issue. This at the expense of not gaining a foothold in one of the fastest growing internet market! The 2 founders had balls! Google thrives ard the world since 2010. It has many many innovations in diverse fields of internet, especially mobile internet, with tremendous successes. THAT is why it could walk away fr the China market!
Alas, recently it just hired a brilliant younger lady scientist Phd born in Beijing but schooled in Princeton n other USA universities who became a full tenure professor at Stanford University at 33 yrs old to head Google AI China. It has returned n had, in a way, bowed to reality that u need to adapt to the ways of the Chinese if we want their biz!
Hopefully it will not be asked to do things that clashed violently with its realist value in China that it may hv to leave again!!
The strongest leader since Chairman Mao n Chairman Deng is clear that internet must be policed n controlled. Stay out of these areas n u can do the cool stuffs to create AI solutions to make chins8n the world a better place!!
