Daily Lessons from Life 25 August 2017 - Changes in South Korea n in Sgp?

1. "The billionaire head of South Korea's Samsung Group, Lee Jae-yong, was sentenced to five years in jail for bribery on Friday in a watershed for South Krea"

This is a BIG DEAL in South Korea! That a top chaebol chief is tried, found guilty of bribery n put to jail! Unimaginable for those who had experiences in that country doing business as there seem some resigned acceptance that some government folks do expect some "gratuities" that in simple English is "bride" for a long time. Even in the K-Drama, such characters r a plenty n suffer no such prosecution n jail term!!

This is no ordinary executive. This is the head of the most powerful corporation in the country getting 5-yr jail term. Maybe it is just time to truly clean up the corrupt culture. Maybe the people had enough of cowardly accepting this as unchangeable.

This gives hope to many other in other countries trying to rid their countries fr pervasive n systemic corruption. A corrupt culture that finds new breathing space. That hopefully takes root n grows strongly.

2. In Sgp, we hv other changes to ring in as our system is by n large quite free of corruption.

The changes we r trying to ring in r, just to make 3:

A. preschool education - one that give every child an equal starting point regardless of social background. Focusing on universal life skills instead of "Primary school ready"!;

B. that sometimes pure meritocracy may not be the most desirable e.g. the Malay only EP is still meritocracy as any Malay EP candidates must meet the very high EP  standard as if in an all-race EP;

C. that being a SMART Nation is more than epayment really despite this hogging the headline. It will entail smart citizens who can operate in the digital world with good judgement of what app to use, how to use properly n how to master technologies instead of being slaved!!

Change is inevitable. Change is no longer constant but accelerating. Still, only when human being master the change will it be meaningful. All the best in this change journey!!
