Daily Lessons from Life 21 March 2017 - Most expensive city in the world!! n Unhappiness?

"Singapore ranked world's most expensive city (for expats!!)

The survey report, which is meant as a guide for human resource managers to calculate compensation packages for expatriates and business travellers, compares consumer prices across 160 products and services in 133 cities around the world.
“Despite topping the ranking, Singapore still offers relative value in some categories, especially compared with its regional peers,” said the EIU report."

"Singapore fell 4 place to 26th in the World Happiness Survey yet still the happiest in Asia

“Happy countries are the ones that have a healthy balance of prosperity, as conventionally measured, and social capital, meaning a high degree of trust in a society, low inequality and confidence in government,” he said.
According to the report, the top four happiest countries ranked highly on caring, freedom, generosity, honesty, health, income and good governance."

Hope that expats' cost of living will not spill into the local cost of living is the most important concern. Being an expat in Hkg SAR n China in the past, there is simply no comparison between the 2. Heaven n earth. If the properties prices ever get caught up from expats n foreigners buying up, the locals will hv a tough time making salaries to pay for their roofs over their heads, not even talking abt investment properties.

Does an expensive place produces happier people? Only for those who enjoyed the economic growth n benefited from the "progress". Yet, in Sgp, one of the factors for being happy is "freedom of speech", scores traditionally low; as defined by the West. In Sgp, it has always being "responsible freedom of speech" n never total freedom of speech.

If the majority of locals r cool with being the most expensive city for the expats n still be happy, great. If not, maybe we can replace all the expats with equally qualified n competitive local talents. As is happening in China with localisation on a massive scale as the local talents come of age. In fact, the prize is working for Chinese MNCs n global giants n become an expat for them!!
