Plenty to write about after missing yesterday and a lot things happened besides today being the commercially created: "Mother's Day", which my family gives a miss each year!
1. "Football: Cameroon's Ekeng dies during Romanian league game - AFP 07 May 2016
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder fell to the ground without any contact with another player just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute during the league game against Viitorul Constanta."
Sudden death from cardiac arrest is lethal! He is not the 1st and neither will he be the last as some heart conditions simply escape scrutiny. Not sure if there is a AED (automatic external defibrillator)) present or not. RIP Mr Ekeng.
2. "London's new Muslim mayor hails 'unity over division' - AFP/Reuters 07 May 2016
LONDON: London's new mayor Sadiq Khan thanked voters for choosing "unity over division" as he was elected on Saturday (May 6), becoming the first Muslim leader of a major Western capital.
In a second round run-off, the son of Pakistani immigrants beat Conservative multimillionaire Zac Goldsmith with 57 per cent, or 1.3 million votes, giving him the largest personal mandate of any British politician.
Khan swept to victory despite repeated accusations from his rivals, including Prime Minister David Cameron, that he sympathised with Islamic extremists - which he denies.
"This election was not without controversy and I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division," the 45-year-old said in his acceptance speech, to cheers from supporters.
"I hope that we will never be offered such a stark choice again. Fear doesn't make us safer, it only makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city."
As he spoke, the mayoral candidate for the far-right Britain First party, Paul Golding, turned his back."
Indeed another fairy tale becoming a reality after that achieved by Leicester City Football Club. Only that this one supposedly will influence MANY MORE Londoners and the visitors/residents!
It DOES NOT august well that the 'far-right' mayoral candidate TURNED HIS BACK when the victor spoke! Of course, IF the voters are sensible and not emotional, this gentleman's behaviours should mean that he will NEVER be considered worthy candidate for a democratic election process! Alas, maybe not?
Anyway, the son of an Pakistani immigrant taxi drive and a seamstress mother living in public housing project with 7 or 8 boys and 1 girl siblings becoming the Mayor of London, after that flamboyant and talkative Boris Johnson, is simply remarkable.
WILL this 1st Muslim Mayor of London LIVE up to the many expectations from the neutral and supporters like: make London less of a choice for terrorist since the Mayor is a fellow Muslim? how is he going to deal with the 'attract new residents who are loaded with money to buy up the real estates and enrich the coffer of the City for its housing, transportation, economic development, and environment, and fire and safety?
The election campaign was supposedly to be one of the most bitter with one of the main opponent, the Conservatives, attacking Mr Khan's 'terrorists supporting' inclination!!
May this Muslim Mayor of London units rather than further divide Londoners. May he also help to change the perception, hence reality, from that of a violent, female unfriendly and non-including group to a peaceful female friendly and inclusive group!
3. "GE in Sarawak State governments and our Singapore Bukit Batok By-Election" are on today while the Philippines Presidential election campaign just concluded with voting happening on Monday!
We will know the winner at the Bukit Batok SMC (Single Member Constituency) before mid-night given that it has less than 23k voters!
Let's sleep on it and find out tomorrow morning!
