"Less severe haze expected this year, with more rain - The Straits Times 05 May 2016
This year, Singapore may not experience haze as severe as last year's.
This is because the El Nino weather phenomenon, which last year caused forest and peatland fires in Indonesia to burn harder and for longer, is expected to subside by the time the traditional dry season rolls in about next month.
Five ministers from countries in the region, who yesterday attended a haze meeting in Singapore, also noted that La Nina - a weather phenomenon associated with more rain in this region - is also expected to kick in by the third quarter of this year."
Well, at least it is some sort of a good news! That the haze, yes it will STILL be here, will NOT be so bad because there will be more rains! NOT because the HUMAN culprits have realised the VERY BAD things they are doing to Mother Earth and affecting the health and economy benefits of ten of millions of people in Asean!! LO!!
Lessons for me are:
1. governments are powerful. Ministers are well paid. At least for Singapore ones. They like to attend regional cooperative meetings a lot as they are NOT held accountable for executing them. WHY? For many of them, come the next General Election, they will be voted out. For some, they never did have to account for anything in their own government so it is just par!;
2. that leads us to think about the 'People power' that toppled long time powerful dictators and dictatorial regimes in some parts of the world. The nearest example is that in The Philippines. The farthest example are those in the so-called 'Arab Spring'. Alas, suffice to say that NONE of those led to any PERMANENT positive changes. So, perhaps the more docile folks in the immediate 'center of the haze' region are simply not inspired!;
3. that leave those who will be DIRECTLY impacted by the 'not-as-bad-as-last-year' haze to take actions. Most will buy some masks for use in the really BAD DAYS. Some will buy and GIVE to the vulnerable who CANNOT afford. Of course, some among the 'vulnerable' will GRAB a few more than necessary for their friends and families; or families and friends. Then the more vocal ones may stage a protest or two, hopefully without meeting any violence from those who started the Haze Fire!! Totally plausible as the 'ground zero' Haze Fire starters are 'powerful' people!!
It is wonderful to learn of the outcome of the 5 nations meeting to discuss this perpetual ANNUAL HAZE is that there will be MORE RAINS this year than last. LOL!!
