Daily Lessons from Life 24 April 2016 - Bukit Batok By-Election and "Happiiness is NOT an App!"

1. "My focus is on the by-election campaign; everything else just a distraction: Chee Soon Juan - CNA 24 April 2016

Dr Chee was responding to questions by reporters on a Facebook post made by chairman of the Singapore People's Party Lina Chiam on Apr 22. In her post, she referred to the SDP's newsletter and said that it contained an image of former SDP secretary-general Chiam See Tong and Dr Chee.
Mrs Chiam said Dr Chee did not seek nor receive permission to include Mr Chiam’s image in the newsletter. She added that Mr Chiam has not given his endorsement to any candidate for the upcoming Bukit Batok by-election."

This by-election will be watched with intense interest as all other opposition parties have not entered to muddy the water leaving it to be a straight fight between SDP's Dr Chee, a born-again politician focused on doing good for the people instead of waging a person war with the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, and a prominent lawyer from the suicide squad of Aljunied GRC.

It would be good to have a 'heavy weight' like Dr Chee in the parliament if the voters of Bukit Batok agree. Dr Chee is right that the focus must be to win the voters' votes by understanding WHAT DO THEY CARE ABOUT MOST? If 'integrity' and 'loyalty' come into questions, he will have to skilfully answer them. If it is 'not wanting to come back to an 'atomised' life after work', he and his team will have to convince HOW SDP can do differently from PAP? After all, the voters, most, if not all, HAD been living an 'atomised' lives!

All the best to Dr Chee. May the best man win! Oh, create some EXCITEMENT for us. Arm-chaired politicians.

2. "Pope tells teens 'happiness not an app' -

VATICAN CITY: Happiness is not an app you can download on your mobile phone, Pope Francis told thousands of teenagers on Sunday (Apr 24) at a mass to mark a weekend dedicated to youth.
"Freedom is not always about doing what you want. In fact it is the gift of being able to choose the right way," he said in a homily punctuated by regular bursts of applause from the crowd on a packed St Peter's Square.

"Your happiness has no price. It cannot be bought and sold: it is not an application you download on a mobile phone. Even the latest version cannot help you to grow and become free in love."
An estimated 70,000 teenagers were in Rome for a weekend of events to celebrate Francis's Jubilee year dedicated to the theme of mercy.
In a surprise move on Saturday, the 79-year-old pontiff heard confessions from 16 of them and a video message from him was broadcast at a rock and rap concert in the Stadio Olimpico.
One of the teenagers chosen to confess to the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics said she had been trembling as she approached the chair on which the pope was sitting in St Peter's Square.
"But as soon as I sat down I had the feeling of being next to a normal person rather than the pope. Francis is really one of us," Anna Taibi, 15, told La Repubblica newspaper.
The Sicilian teenager said she had been touched by Francis's tenderness as he listened to her confession.
"I expected him to give me a penance ... instead he absolved me and let me go."
The importance of mobile phones to contemporary teenagers was also reflected in Francis's message to the concert.
Clutching an iPhone, he told his audience that living without Jesus was like not having any signal. "Always be sure to go where there is a network: family, parish, school," he said."

I really like this Pope Francis chappy! Seriously. How cool can it be for the Pope to say: 'Living without Jesus was like not having any signal for your mobile phone!'

Lessons for me are:

1. I am working with a Catholic charity NOW and never in my wildest dream that I will be working with ANY religious organization. This one I am involved is FUNDED by the Catholic Church and have 4 beneficiaries in it: 1 Indian who is an Anglican, 1 Indian who is a Hindu, 1 Malay who is a Muslim and 1 Chinese who is a Buddhist while I am an agnostic! How WONDERFUL can this be! ONLY in Singapore would this be possible. Yet, only when the Church is so enlightened WILL it FUND this charity! I am involved with something special;

2. Pope Francis has been making quite a few unorthodox moves since he became the Pope. Some may say he is just responding to reality. YET, one of the most endearing, and sacred even, things about RELIGION is that it has to have something PERMANENT! Something that cannot be changed or challenged otherwise the whole faith has no solid foundation. e.g. there is a God e.g. there are rules that God made and men are supposed to just follow or else... For me, if there is a God, the rules have to be 'do good to others and self'. Period. I think, as long as Pope Francis is heading in that direction, he can change anything he wants and should!;

3. this bring to mind the Facebook post by the Ambassador-at-large and ex-Permanent Sec of MFA who 'warned' Japanese worshippers NOT to be taken in by the on-appeal CHC Pastor Kong Hee and his wife's recent missionary trips to Japan. He thundered: "Don't be deceived by this, what words did he used: 'disgraced Singaporean' as he has committed a grave crime of misusing church fund.

The report said this Ambassador-at-large and ex-PS of MFA is KNOWN for his outspokenness. The fact that he is NOW, after retiring, still hired as 'Policy Advisor' to MFA worried ME. In MFA, we DO NOT need 'outspokenness' seriously. Hopefully his 'outspokenness' is NOT part of our FA Policies! LOL!!

The irony, and the POWER, of religion is revealed in this classical case of Kong Hee and his, STILL FAITHFUL followers, that they disbelieve Kong Hee had done ANYTHING WRONG! Government or not!
