Daily Lessons from Life 03 February 2016 - Support for Merkel at four-and-a-half year low, doubts grow over refugee policy

BERLIN: Popular support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel has tumbled to its lowest level for 4 1/2 years, a poll showed on Wednesday, with a large majority of voters sceptical that her government has the refugee crisis under control.

The survey for public broadcaster ARD also showed a drop in support for Merkel's conservatives, while backing for the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party rose to its highest ever point in the poll.

Merkel has come under increasing pressure to reduce the number of asylum-seekers after 1.1 million entered Germany last year. Public unease has also grown following mass sexual assaults on women in Cologne on New Year's Eve.

The survey, conducted on Feb. 1-2, showed just 46 percent of Germans supported her, the lowest proportion since August 2011. In April last year, before the migrant crisis erupted, she enjoyed the backing of 75 percent.

The poll also found that 81 percent did not believe the government was handling the refugee crisis well - a sign of rising dissatisfaction with efforts to limit the influx of those fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.

Backing for her conservative bloc, comprised of her Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), also fell four points to 35 points.

The results of the poll highlight the challenge faced by Germany's grand coalition parties - the CDU, CSU and Social Democrats (SPD) - to convince voters they can master the refugee crisis before three state elections scheduled in March."

I admire Ms Merkel for sure. She is the MAN for me! A bit like Mrs Thatchers!!

Yet:

1. it is a colossal mistake to JUST let in 1.1m 'refugees' into her country. I can understand where she is coming from, being an East German integrated into West Germany that become Germany, she feels for people who need to find a new start in a 'foreign' land;

2. I read that the German has a good system of distributing the refugees around the country and consciously prevent them from forming an enclave and slums by providing education and jobs. A multi-billion budget, supposedly, to fund this type of program. It is good intention. At the same time is sustainability cannot be assumed!;

3. while having the East German into West Germany is hard given the 'communist way' vs. the liberal Western way, the challenge is never the same as integrating a group of people with a very powerful emotional pillar, or baggage if I look at it in the negative way, called: Religion! When you have to be totally loyal to your religion, you are also totally emotional and cannot be rational. In such situation, any disagreement about religion has no rational basis to discuss, debate and deliberate. This is especially so IF the religious ones belong to the radical lots!

The solution for refuges is really to HOLD them till they are ready to GO BACK to their HOME COUNTRY to reclaim their lives, their religious beliefs and their future. It has to be that way. It cannot be taking over the HOST country's resources and making the host country's people living in fear and instability!

Come, stay a while and then go home. Rightly so.

Peace on earth.
