Daily Lessons from Life 02 January 2014 - Smooth traffic on MCE during peak hours on Day 5: LTA

"Smooth traffic on MCE during peak hours on Day 5: LTA - AsiaOne Jan 2, 2014

SINGAPORE - Traffic on the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) on Day 5 since its opening on Sunday was smooth during the morning and evening peak hours, said LTA in a statement to the media on Thursday.

Based on LTA's traffic monitoring, traffic volume using the MCE and adjoining roads today was about 80-90 per cent of that during a typical weekday. More temporary signs were put up at key approaches to alert motorists of the road network changes and the best approaches to their destination, said LTA.

The government authority also said it will continue to deploy traffic wardens to help direct motorists, and to adjust the traffic light timings to facilitate traffic flow. It will also continue to monitor the traffic conditions closely.

"We seek motorists' cooperation and understanding as all of us adjust to the new expressway and road configuration," it said."

MCE opened to a lot of fanfares, chief among them is the phrase: "A significant engineering feat!" It did not take long for the creators to hear the deafening complaints from motorists on the 1st Monday of use that they just want a smooth ride, 'engineering feat' or not!

Lessons for me are:

1. it is a very expensive road work. The most expensive per km of road actually. So, when the hype is high, the expectations are high too. Which is good as we want to set high expectations instead of low ones as it will spur us to strive for 'perfection'!;

2. when critical feedback or even blatant insensitive and overly aggressive comments were hauled our ways as those HIGH expectations were not met, the best way to respond is to: listen, take them all in and work on those constructive ones earnestly. To be able to eat humble pie is a rare virtue these days;

3. the recovery of damaged reputation or services MUST be swift and decisive. Since we are focused on taking in the constructive feedback and providing immediate solutions while constructing the longer term solutions, we get results. Had we focused on denying those criticisms, wasting limited resources and energy to defend the clearly not so ideal results, the battles and the war would have been lost.

So, kudos to LTA for fixing the issues so quickly. The multi-billion invested in this MCE will reap the benefits that the project had promised. Good recovery for 2014!
