Daily Lessons from Life 21 July 2013 - Malaysia Education Ministry told to find out why top scorers denied varsity admission

"Malaysia Education Ministry told to find out why top scorers denied varsity admission - The Star/Asia News Network Jul 21, 2013 BANGI - The Education ministry has been directed by the Cabinet to look into weaknesses in the selection procedures for entry into local universities in light of the failure by top scorers to gain admission. Hundreds of students, including 55 with perfect cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0 had not gained places to study courses of their choice or failed to be offered places in universities. They had cried foul and had approached MCA and MIC for help. In a tweet, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had pledged to discuss the matter in Cabinet on how to help the affected students." A strange phenomenon really given that most countries would want to keep their top young students in their own university system UNLESS they feel that these students should be given scholarship and study in top foreign universities to broaden their horizon and bring the expanded view and knowledge, skills and experiences back to the home country and enrich the home country's reach. Which should be the case really. Lessons for me are: 1. this is not the first time such situations had developed. Should never have happened after the 1st time if the authorities are serious about the issue, really; 2. is this about allocation of the 'choice courses' between the various races? seems that way though never really, or will never, been declared as such. It is so politically INCORRECT? For me, putting the head in the sand does not means the thorny problem is not there!; 3. the power-that-be has tweeted that it will be discussed in the cabinet. It will be interesting to note if anything concrete will emerge from such meeting. Actions speak louder than words. Beware!! p/s: It is for the Malaysian people and government to decide and my piece here is just expressing how I see the situation. No disrespect at all. Thanks.
