It is shocking to read about crimes against women on the news today in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
That women are killed for NOT bringing enough dowry money (money to be brought by the bride to the bridegroom when she married into his family!)! Or forced to commit suicide out of despair!
That a young girl of 17 was striped naked and made to run (or staggered in a daze and with a dead look in her eyes as someone described it) for almost 8km allegedly because she fell in love with a boy in next village!
Is this something imaginable in the 21st century? Am I supposed NOT to pass judgement on the people who perpetrated these despicable and incomprehensible crimes against their OWN bride and fellow human being?
Lessons for me are:
1. it is a very very sad reality that there STILL are such people. People who are sicked in their heads or really very very ignorant or numbed to human feeling! So, be careful. They are out there!;
2. in those communities where such crimes occurred, are there NOT some who seriously opposed these crimes but felt hapless and weak to offer a resistance or to stand up for the victims? Maybe there are many. The trouble is we have a silent majority that allowed the cruel minority to rule! If you let them, they will get you!!;
3. many of them called these crimes a custom and hence it is not a crime but a righteous way to preserve and defend the traditional! Many do sincerely believed it. For this gripe to be loosen, drastic actions must be taken against any perpetrators of such crimes. Let there be no mercy. Let they be made examples that the righteous ones DO NOT condone such behaviors. It is an eye for an eye. Except it will be metered out by the vocal majority!
May those so wronged rest in peace. May those who are on the edge of being victimized find help sooner rather than later. May the silent majority speaks up fearlessly so that there will be change. Change for the better. Change where people respect and cherish their women folks!
