Daily Lessons from Life 10 August 2010 - CEO of HP Forced to Resign

Well I was not going to comment on this as it is a very sad story. At the same time I could not escaped it as many learned people and prominent people had commented on this saga.

So, here I go:

1. Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle and billionaire, blasted the HP Board for forcing the CEO to resign as cowardly and disastrous on the scale of 'Apple firing Steve Jobs for the 1st time'!! He obviously believed that fiddling with the expense statements for some USD20k is not something to get a CEO that brought sterling results to the company's shareholders and employees! I think he is mistaken - badly. There are fundamental beliefs that CANNOT be bargained. Integrity and personifying what you preached is one of them!;

2. maybe there are more than meet the eyes with this 'forced resignation' since the ex-CEO Mark Hurd was cleared of the original complaints of sexual harassment. He was forced out due to inappropriate claiming of corporate expenses!! Some said it was an excuse to get him off as there is a need for a new leader to bring HP forward after the initial consolidation and operationally focused job of Mark's early work! Whatever it is, surely hypocrisy will be at its height IF someone who expounded the need to have ethical conducts is allowed to stay on as the leader!;

3. it shows that human being likes to destroy themselves when they become self-conceited after a long successful period or being lauded as 'superstar'. In fact I read an ex-McKinsey chief in Singapore said that NOT many successful CEOs ended their career well! When one lost sight of WHY one wants to be the top dog? It is easy to fall from being self-confident and self-assured to being self-conceited! So, ever so often the successful people have to ask themselves: am I doing it because I can create a great good for a bigger number of people who work with and for me?

May Mr. Mark Hurd, with wounded pride probably, rides into the sunset with his severance package of, rumoured, USD40m. Provided his wife is not asking for half of his wealth with a divorce filing?
