TOKYO - A STRONG earthquake jolted northern Japan early on Thursday, injuring at least 91 people, trapping hundreds in halted trains and temporarily cutting off electric power to thousands of homes.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said there was no threat of a tsunami from the quake, which struck at 00:26 (11.26pm Singapore time on Wednesday) and had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 and could be felt as far away as Tokyo.

A National Police Agency official said that 91 people were confirmed injured, 15 of whom were seriously hurt. Many were injured in falls or suffered cuts from broken glass."

I wonder what can be done to prepare the Japanese and foreigners who reside in Tokyo, one of the great cosmopolitan cities in the world!

Lessons for me:

1. you must plan for the eventuality! Japan has been diligent and drills are carried out regular and assessed;

2. it is not easy to motivate people with an 'event that may or may not happened in the future!'. People who are NOT prepared will be caught off-guard and probably paid a higher price for it!!;

3. even if you had prepared, the BIG ONE will bring unprecedented damages in human life and properties!! Sometimes to do the right things you have to persist regardless. That's what separately us from those who merely do things to satisfy the public! Those that are committed will put in the necessary drills to perfection!

I hope the BIG ONE will not hit Tokyo, otherwise it will be a serious devastation to the innocent people!
