Being depressing seeing 2 long time friends' relationship breaking down so badly n so quickly!! Just last year we manged to hv President Xi n President Ma together in Sgp!
What could had led to this, n more importantly, how can we restore the friendly ties quickly?
1. China n Sgp r both independent sovereign states. Nothing will change that;
2. China takes "One China" very seriously n is non-negotiable. This is especially so after Tsai Yin Wen became the President after President Ma;
3. China is consistent as it told USA n all other nations abt it's "One China" stance. Not just targeting Sgp;
4. Sgp needs international laws as a reference for international disputes. At the same time, it is not perfect n unofficial friendly negotiations can be more effective;
5. Asean countries with issues with China in the SCS hv started working with China. Some a 180 degree change. Sgp should pay heed to this;
6. Trump USA is a shock to Sgp n Sgp's value will diminish due to: a. if we r no longer trusted ling time friend of China; n b. Trump is talking tough with China n need no intermediary anyway!;
7. So, Sgp government should re-examine our approach to this Terrex tanks issue deeply n strategically;
8. the arrogance in Sgp domestic affairs cannot be the way to deal in geopolitical arena!! No?
To my Chinese friends, we r friends. Sgp government is not against China.
ps: the Chinese just released a White Paper on Asia Pacific security matter stating small n medium sized countries need not pick a side note just be neutral. At the same time it says it will be forced to "push" anyone not respecting it's unilateral reading of SCS territorial claims. Tough situation.
