"To tackle social and political issues, return to ‘honest politics’: DPM Tharman"
DPM Tharman is right that the upsets in US Presidential Election n Brexit r the manifestation of some long running discontent n disillusion of the democratic majority whose life hv not benefit in step with the minority who had gained the most from the so-called economic growth of the past few decades.
When the world is still in a nation state mindset, every democratically elected government has to put it's nation n people 1st. In this case, some nations n someone will hv to suffer when equal distribution of resources, etc. r insufficient or inadequate.
Populist politics will not work if the electorates r rational n emotionally engaged with the "elites" that governed them.
Every government must know they r to serve the interests of at least 50.1% of the voters. If they r rational n wise, populism will fail. Such wisdom has to be developed from young at home, in school, at work n learning from the behaviours of the "elites".
When the government is not gracious towards the oppositions, they learn. When the government strong-armed the people with reasonable divergence views n solutions, they learn to keep quiet n just toed the lines!!
With such mentality, there will b no hope of a solution that was the most appropriate after shifting through many diverse ideas. It would be just the ruling government feeling happy that the voters see eye-to-eye with the only government's solution!!
