On the 1st workday of 2017, it is heartening to learn that Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat will be presenting the CFE Report on 20 January 2017, the same day that President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated in the USA (a day after Singapore time), and then the FY2017-18 Budget on 20 February, a month later. That is a lot to do for him as he just recovered from an unexpected stroke a few months back during a Cabinet meeting!
Whatever it is, it shows that Minister Heng is back to full throttle and hope that he is keenly aware of the need to pace himself.
Another good news is that the Singapore economy post +1.8% growth in 4Q16 and hence avoided a technical recession while also achieved 1.8% growth in GDP! Not to bad given the glooms and dooms surrounding our O&G and related marine industries were hit badly by the depressed oil prices though the prices had gone above USD50 per barrel consistently.
Welcome back Minister Heng. Just do pace yourself as the pressures are tremendous as the expectations may border on 'unrealistic' as people WANT to see the CFE Report's recommendations as the 'cure all' for the long term prosperity in an Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) era!
