"Culture of leadership self-renewal needs to be entrenched: PM Lee
SINGAPORE: The next team of Singapore's political leaders is shaping up and the "uneventful" transitions of the past will serve as useful precedents, Mr Lee said on Thursday (Nov 8).
He was speaking about leadership renewal at the launch of Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong’s biography, Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story, held at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.
Mr Goh took over the reins as Singapore’s Prime Minister from the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew in 1990, then passed on the baton to the younger Mr Lee in 2004.
"I hope my story will encourage the present and future generations of ‘technocrats’, as my colleagues and I were called once, to serve their country," he said."
ESM Goh's time has no million dollar pay package for cabinet ministers n the stake of "losing one's 'job'" is hence low.
Now, the stake is so high that it is totally possible that no one wants to rock the boat or be independent enough to try new things or go against the "boss" though everyone said all r equal!!
There lies the challenge: "How to get people who r good n can live with a S$500k per yr fixed pay in the cabinet?"
Maybe this will never be as the leadership totally believe that only monetary owning power defines "talent". Maybe the leadership r correct. Maybe the doubting people, a minority?, don't know what they r worrying abt!!
Whatever, leadership renewal will go on. N then we will know if the 4th gen is up to the task.
Only time will tell!!
