"Football: Spain fire Lopetegui two days before World Cup debut, Hierro takes charge

KRASNODAR, Russia: Spain coach Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked on Wednesday (Jun 13), two days before their opening World Cup match, for failing to tell his federation about his move to Real Madrid after the tournament and replaced by Fernando Hierro.
Former Spain defender Hierro's only previous senior coaching role was one season with Oviedo in the Spanish second division, although he was also assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid before that.
The 50-year-old will have barely 48 hours to prepare his team for their opening World Cup match against neighbours and bitter rivals Portugal in Sochi on Friday.
Real unexpectedly announced on Tuesday that Lopetegui, who had only recently extended his contract with Spain and was unbeaten in his 20 games in charge, would take over next season.
In announcing one of the most extraordinary coach sackings in World Cup history, Spanish football federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales said he had found out about the move five minutes before it was announced by the Champions League winners.
"The coach, while he is a RFEF employee cannot do things in this way. I found out with a phone call five minutes before the official announcement. We feel obliged to take this decision," Rubiales told a news conference at the team base in Krasnodar.
"In the first reaction to the decision, former Spain forward Juanito said Rubiales' arguments had been impeccable.
"The values of the national team are above everything," he said on Twitter. "If we can't win the World Cup, the Spanish are now champions of dignity.""
An exercise in what is the right thing to do reflecting the professional ethical values of an organisation - charity or commercial or just a football club!!
For a nation with big ambition to win the 2nd World Cup, n the team to do so, to sack its manager/coach who had never been beaten since taking over the regime for more than 20 games is bold n decisive! Some fans will be upset that this may affect the team's performance negatively n they hv to wait another 4 long years to win the World Cup!!
Yet, for me this is abt doing the Right Things as ontjáye cannot condone the "Let me tell u what; I had a just found another job n will be starting soon!"

Indeed, being the Champions of Dignity is MORE PRECIOUS!!
