"Thum Ping Tjin ‘engineered’ academic support for himself after hearing on Deliberate Online Falsehoods: Charles Chong

SINGAPORE: After being questioned for about six hours at a Select Committee hearing on Deliberate Online Falsehoods last month, historian Thum Ping Tjin received the support of dozens of academics who criticised the way he had been grilled by Home and Law Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.

About 230 academics from around the world had signed an open letter, addressed to committee chairman Charles Chong, taking issue with the “unacceptable treatment” of Dr Thum.

That support, however, seems to have been “primarily engineered” by Dr Thum himself, said Mr Chong in a statement on Monday (Apr 30), after seeing an email exchange between two trustees of a group called Project Southeast Asia.

The group, which is made up mainly of foreign academics, had on Apr 16 issued a statement online in support of Dr Thum, expressing similar sentiments as that of the open letter.

Mr Chong responded to Project Southeast Asia on Apr 20.

However, the group’s email correspondence after that suggests that “there has been a coordinated attempt, with foreign actors involved, to try to influence and subvert our parliamentary processes”, said Mr Chong on Monday.

He added: “We must protect our independence and the institution of Parliament. The information now available suggests that there has been a coordinated attempt, with foreign actors involved, to try to influence and subvert our parliamentary processes. This is a serious matter.”"

So this saga is not over. It will b interesting to see how many of those scholars will come out to "wash their hands or cut their ties" that they genuinely supportd Dr Thum, assuming MP Charles Chong is accurate in his revelation!

The coordinators must be brought to justice n punish for trying to influence our parliamentary processes! Or is it really that?

The Select Committee on Falsehood Online had concluded it has heard whoever had wanted to share their input on this subject in person or via written submissions. Did Dr Thum n his alleged conspirator(s) influence the Select Committee at all? There is no sign that it did! Yes?

I m not sure why the government want to waste more resources on nailing this scholar (n businessman?) down so badly? Does the government think that many people believe their version of Ops Coldstore vs. the official one so passionately pursued by double Minister of Home Affairs n Laws after 6 hrs if grilling? Surely not!!

If so, Dr Thum's may hv something that the people who believed his version that the official ones lacked?

Since MP Charles Chong said it is interfering in the parliamentary proceedings of am x-colony, maybe we should leave The Commonwealth, a relic of a British Empire past??

Also, the government should charge Dr Thum n his conspirator(s)?

Should Dr Thum n his folks engage in this to-n-from conversation?

Which is falsehoods here??
