Daily Lessons from Life 11 July 2017 - Small nation must stand up n b counted

"Singapore must 'stand up and be counted': PM Lee on country's foreign policy

MUNICH: As a small country, Singapore has to "take the world as it is" but at the same time protect the country's fundamental interests, especially in matters of safety, security, or its position in the world.

“We are under no illusions. This is a dangerous world, there are countries big and small – Singapore is small," PM Lee told Singapore reporters. "And we have to take the world as it is, at the same time we have to protect our interests, and do the best for ourselves (as) we can in the world.”

The Prime Minister's comments come as the question of how Singapore should conduct its foreign policy resurfaced recently. Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam as well as a few diplomats took issue with a commentary by Professor Kishore Mahbubani who wrote that "small states must always behave like small states."

When asked about the role of small states on the global stage, PM Lee said Singapore has a responsibility to highlight and deal with important issues which concern the country."

Sgp was invited to the G20 due to its chairmanship or spokesmanship for 3G (Global Governance Group), a group of 30 small nations.

This time round PM Lee did not utter any nonsense nor self-conceiting statements. That is good. In fact, to be encouraged.

He did not say China or USA must observe international trade. He did not tell China it must observe international rules in the SCS.

He said small nations need international trades, which is neutral n a fact. No problem!

So, can those who insist we must tell the big guys off to show that we r strong n can punch above our weight accept the DIFFERENCE between strong foreign affairs handling from acting beyond your size?

Like I said before: if any big power want to invade Sgp, I will fight them. No two way abt this.

I will, however, not give them a legitimate excuse to invade uss or make life difficult when we need them MORE THAN they need us economically since Sgp is all abt $$$.

Maybe the LEEs saga put some reality back into the PM's behaviours.

Peace to the world. Majulah Singapura.
