Daily Lessons from Life 03 August 2016 - CPF Proposed Flexibility and 'Hurtful' Comments

1. "CPF payouts and returns: Proposals focus on providing flexibility - CNA 03 August 2016

SINGAPORE: An option of a CPF LIFE plan with escalating payouts, and an alternative private investment scheme for those prepared to take some risk for a higher expected return were new recommendations put forth by the CPF advisory panel on Wednesday (Aug 3).
The recommendations, which have been accepted by the Government, conclude almost two years of work by the panel, which was appointed by the Manpower Ministry in September 2014.
According to the panel, the second set of its recommendations focused on providing “an option for members who prefer CPF payouts that are initially lower but rise with time to help with increases in the cost of living”, and providing more flexibility for members who wish to take on higher risk for higher returns, through private investment plans."

Good to read about the 2nd set of recommendations accepted by the government after 2 years of hard and diligent work.

I am not sure many still remember the 'trouble maker' Blogger Roy who stirred up the 'controversy' about how the returns of the CPF for the members were so good among other points raised.

That got many CPF members to talk about the returns and how some of they were willing to take on more risks in search of higher returns, etc. etc.

Blogger Roy got himself into troubles with careless accusation of mismanagement of the CPF money and had to pay for it. Fair and square. Good intention must be accompanied by good execution.

Regardless, I want to give credit where credit is due. So, thank you Blogger Roy for the 'stirring' during that period. Also, thanks to the government for responding to the controversy and dig deep to understand the make-up of the CPF members and acknowledging that some of them perhaps can handle their own retirement fund a bit more flexibly. albeit still under the CPF Board's supervision or approved schemes.

It is a win-win situation for the government and the CPF members, whom among them many voters.

2. "President Tony Tan refutes 'hurtful' comments made at forum - CNA 03 August 2016

SINGAPORE: President Tony Tan Keng Yam on Wednesday (Aug 3) refuted comments made at a forum that suggested that he was not supportive of increased funding for polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITEs), saying that the comments were "very hurtful" to him.

The comments were reportedly made at a forum last month by Mr Tay Kheng Soon, brother of the late Senior Minister of State for Education Dr Tay Eng Soon.

The Singapore President was Education Minister from 1980 to 1981 and from 1985 to 1991, during which the late Dr Tay served in the Ministry of Education.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, President Tan said: "The claim is very hurtful because when I was Cabinet Minister, the education of our children was very close to my heart. For that reason, when I was Education Minister, I increased support for the education of all our students, with particular focus on our children in the polys and ITEs, or what was then the VITB (Vocational and Industrial Training Board).”"

Good that President Tan has a chance to clarify. And his good grace to leave it at that and not pursue a legal case against the brother of the late MOS Tay.

President Tan was hurt too during the last Presidential election campaign that one of his sons had this Defence Chief Scientific Officer post created where he served from NS to Reservist while studying all the way to PhD in the USA.

He also gracefully let it passed. This is important gracious behaviours. Even when what were said weren't true, he did not go the litigations way.
