Reported that NUS orientation program included a re-enactment of an incestuous rape and some other sexually inappropriate activities. The university's response were: we have guidelines and we have briefed the student leaders about what are acceptable and what are not! So cookie-cutter like is the response that one must be pardoned for believing that the university authority care less about such trivial as THESE complaints had been even present for the last decade!!
Instead of this unemotional and robotic-like response, the university authority perhaps may want to:
1. named the student leader or leaders who initiated these activities publicly given that she/he or they were WARNED specifically about what is acceptable and what is not! The offender(s) cannot plead ignorance for sure;
2. think deeper about the implication of giving lip service and doing nothing as: a. the originator(s) of such activities may be mentally very disturbed, they need psychological help; b. the victims and the passive participants maybe mentally scarred and may decide to do that same to the next batch of new students hence perpetuating a sick culture un-befitting that of members of a higher institute of learning. This will be doubly tragic even though any copy-cat or subsequent offenders will never be let off citing 'I became so evil because someone had done evil things to me!'; c. imagine what IF the victims are their own kids?;
3. when such stupid act and clearly undesirable behaviours are tolerated, it may send the wrong signals that it is OK to do so. So, when the 'offenders' were brought to answer for their actions they will be very confused and angry with the authorities and may then commit something worst than their initiate actions in uncontrolled rage and sense of being treated unfairly! That will be triply tragedy!
This type of incident must not be treated lightly. It is quite, in fact, very, sick to come up with an incestuous rape as an orientation activity. Truly.
Do we need to have the Standard University rape to happen in Singapore before the university authority take such devious behaviours seriously?
p/s: I know some liberal students will say having sex is no big deal as university students since they are at least 18 years old. Well, your bodies your destiny. At the same time, RAPE is never just having an sexual act. It is bullying. It is hurting someone. It is a shameful act. And the offender must never to be excused. Now, go study it.
