Daily Lessons from Life 08 June 2016 - Power of Custom!! Foreign influences on Pink Dot?

1. "Pakistani teen burnt alive by her mother for choosing own husband: Officials - AFP 8 June 2016

LAHORE: A Pakistani teenager was burnt alive by her mother on Wednesday (Jun 8) after marrying a man of her own choice, police said, the latest in a string of so-called "honour killings" in the country.

Zeenat Bibi, 16, was set on fire by her mother Perveen Bibi in the eastern city of Lahore a little more than a week after the wedding, police said.

"Perveen Bibi killed her daughter Zeenat Bibi by burning her alive around 9.00am on Wednesday," Haidar Ashraf, a senior police official told AFP, adding the teen had married a man named Hasan on May 29.

It was the third such "honour killing" in as many months."

Every now and then we read about such deep-seated aged old custom that totally numbed ordinary 'modern' 21st century men and women on why such custom would had been stoutly and fearlessly been observed by human being!

Of course, in this case, the victim is, in my opinion, too young to be talking about marriage in our context.

It is something for the people of that region in that country to make sense. All I want to say is: a tragedy from my perspective. A young life lost in the most cruel and tragic manner. At the hands of the one who gave birth to her. Tears in Heaven?

2. "Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a statement that foreign sponsoring of event at the Speakers' Corner should stop - CNA 8 June 2016"

Well, I tried not to comment on this event as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) lifestyle and values are still not mainstream. Thankfully if I look purely from the reproduction of the human species perspective.

Of course, it is well known that the CEO of Apple is an out-of-closet gay and proud to be one. While many progressive, or to the detractors, 'questionable' progression, high tech internet companies are pro-LGBT and highly inclusive in their corporate values. Perhaps understandably as empirical evidence seems to suggest and support that the 'creative human beings' are pretty diverse and unconventional in outlook and lifestyle.

Of course, should Singapore embrace the LGBT values as a mainstream one had been debated to death. And the position of the government is still: we are not ready.

To be honest, it is clear that the news media is NOT wanting to be perceived to be against LGBT. Hence the space given to the reporting of this year Pink Dot event.

Prior to this, and a week or two ago, some religious groups were advocating a 'wear white' campaign as an opposite to wearing pink. That was reported.

However, it would have been great to have the Pink Dot and the 'Wear White' campaign be reported ON the SAME DAY side-by-side in the front page of our national broadsheet to show that Singapore is mature enough to accept people who want to live the pink dot or the 'wear white' lifestyle. No need to be antagonistic against each other. Just laying them out for people to decide which one they want.
