1. "New anti-smoking rules from June 1: What you need to know - The Straits Times 01 June 2016
SINGAPORE - From Wednesday (June 1), reservoirs and more than 400 parks, including those in private and public housing estates, have been added to the list of smoke-free areas.
Previously, smoking was prohibited in 32,000 places such as shopping malls, cinemas and hospitals.
Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources Amy Khor said in Parliament in April that the Government's long-term goal is to snuff out smoking in all public areas.
This is to protect non-smokers from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke."
One of my closest and longest buddies will be totally upset with this extension of non-smoking areas! He feels that his individual right to smoke has been curtailed and suppressed to an intolerable degree and it is very unfair to him and his fellow smokers!
Much as I love him, and still do despite failing on many occasions to encourage, influence and plead with him to quit smoking, his reasoning is not acceptable to me. Respectfully, though, I agree that he can, and must, let his unhappy feeling known.
As it is in the public areas, the laws will have to be adhered to. This is especially so when '2nd-hand smoke' has bee empirically proven that it can contribute to undesirable effects on the health of human beings who had been exposed on a long term basis.
2. "Philippine President-elect Duterte unveils Cabinet made up of 'men of integrity' - The Straits Times 1 June 2016
An eclectic mix of leftists, academics and close friends has formed Filipino President-elect Rodrigo Duterte's new Cabinet, which he unveiled yesterday at a news conference.
"I assure you, these are all men of integrity and honesty," Mr Duterte said, shortly after presiding over his first Cabinet meeting in Davao City, 970km south of the capital Manila.
The 71-year-old former Davao City mayor, who won a landslide victory last month after a controversial campaign, has been praised for several of the appointments.
Asked about a tabloid columnist who was recently killed by a hired hitman, Mr Duterte claimed that corruption had to do with the deaths of some journalists. "Journalists are killed for being corrupt. Just because you are a journalist, (doesn't mean) you are exempt from assassination," he said."
This guy is really a breath of fresh air though not without controversies! It will be interesting to follow his regime and see where it will lead the great country of, the Philippines, to in the coming years.
With all this tough talking and positioning on busting crimes and 'killing' killers and the 'softer corrupted officials and business people, JOURNALISTs, etc.', I do expect crimes and corruption to go WAY DOWN. Hopefully that will translate to laws and orders and attracting foreign investments and tourists to visit the country.
One learning point for me definitely is that the VP and the President does not have to be partners in the government! How does it work? Will be good to watch and learn!! Hmm.
