Daily Lessons from Life 29 April 2016 - Transgender no reservist and China is boss of Hkg SAR

1. Transgender Singaporean granted UK asylum to avoid reservist training - The Straits Times 29 Apr 2016

A transgender Singaporean who "has been living as a woman for the past 10 years" has been granted sanctuary in Britain to protect her from having to do reservist training in Singapore."

This is WAY COOL! Though I am not sure she needs to get an UK asylum to avoid doing reservist as our enlightened MinDef would have been happy to grant her her wish. On 2nd thought, maybe not a total exemption from reservist but as a 'female' reservist role. No?

I hope this RARE granting of asylum will not damage the relationship between the ex-colonial master, UK, and its former colonial servant, Singapore.

2. "China denies request for Hong Kong visit by US carrier group - State Department - Reuter 29 Apr 2016

WASHINGTON: China has denied a U.S. request for a U.S. carrier strike group led by the USS John C. Stennis to make a port visit to Hong Kong, the U.S. State Department said on Friday.

A spokeswoman for the State Department, Anna Richey-Allen, said another U.S. warship, the USS Blue Ridge, was currently in Hong Kong on a port visit and the United States expected that to continue."

China will continue to defend its sovereignty over Hong Kong, or Hkg SAR as it would really like th world to address Hkg by, and let the US knows 'who is the boss of Hkg SAR'!

As long as China is just standing up to the big boys like the USA, Russia, and maybe, sorry, no other country is in their 'respect' zone, it is fine with me.

Just that such assertiveness is quite natural to extend to treating its 'smaller' friends or foes. If it asserts itself too strongly in the long running disputed territorial issue in the South China Sea with Asean countries, WE have a problem!

Where does Singapore stand? It is quite clear to me where we stand. We stand for: international territorial dispute will have to be settled by the international court. Just like how we settled our 'little white rock' dispute with our close neighbour, Malaysia!

So, stands up, or post up against the big boys for all we care China. Just be gentler with the smaller guys like us. Can?
