"Ride to work? More road safety measures, parking facilities needed, say cyclists - CNA 16 Apr 2016
SINGAPORE: Cycling to work remains a rarity in Singapore, but this could change in coming years as new active mobility initiatives for a "car-lite" city take effect.
The plans were announced by the National Development and Transport ministries in Parliament earlier this week (April 11 and 12), and cyclists on Saturday (April 16) said they were looking forward to their implementation."
I RIDE a bike to work NOW as my work place is just about 3km away.
1. I ride as far as possible on FOOTPATH, not the PCN footpath, but just NORMAL regular footpath. Most of the time I ride AGAINST the traffic. WHY? For safety reason. Plain and simple!;
2. while I ride on FOOTPATH, I:
a. don't ride faster than 8km/hr! So, the recent Mobility Council or Committee recommendation of allowing bicycle and other personal mobile devices to SHARE footpaths (including PCN!) with pedestrians of 15km/hr is WAY TOO EXCESSIVE! I would like the members who SUGGESTED it is a 'SAFE' speed to volunteer in an experiment of having a cyclist knocks into him/her/them at 15km/hr speed!;
b. DISMOUNT and PUSH my bike when I come across bus stops with too many waiting commuters;
c. SLOW DOWN considerable when passing pedestrians who are WALKING in the DIRECTION I am riding i.e. with their backs to me. I also DO NOT use my 'cycling bell' mounted as I HAVE TO LOOK OUT for them since they have their backs to me!!
3. So, I have been CIVIL minded and cycling safely minded when cycling to work. While I am not perfect, I do believe that THESE ARE the BASIC mindfulness, diligence and RESPONSIBILITIES I have to discharge IF I want to ride safely to work and on FOOTPATHS.
As for riding on the road with the vehicles owners, I STILL have my reservation though I DO ride on the roads when there are NO or very little traffics.
