"Singapore should kill 'kiasu' culture: NMP Kuik Shiao-Yin - CNA 05 Apr 2016
This “national habit of fear” has resulted in huge, costly trade-offs in human development, manpower and time and dollars spent, says the Nominated Member of Parliament."
It is good to read of what the NEW NMP Ms Kuik had to share on Kiasuism.
Indeed, 'negative motivator' can be motivating but only to a point! When a 'negative motivator' like 'kiasu' go beyond a certain threshold, it becomes a REAL limiting factor for sure!
At the same time, some of the description of 'kiasu' behaviours like 'herd instinct' of people swarming to be the latest F&B phenomena ACTUALLY means they are NOT kiasu but FAIRLY brain-dead! The law of 'supply and demand' will decide that the prices will fall quickly and no profit will be made when the barrier of entry is low and when many suppliers can just show up and play!
So, let's be CLEAR about what is 'kiasu' and what is 'brainless or brain-dead'!!
"Amid industry transformation push, job security must be ensured: WP MPs - CNA 05 Apr 2016
Firms should keep Singaporeans at the centre of their efforts, says MP Pritam Singh, while MP Faisal Manap says there should not be a situation where workers feel "discarded" as a result of automation."
There is NO DOUBT that Singaporeans MUST come first when it comes to JOBS. This is especially so when the Singaporeans are AT LEAST as good as the non-Singaporeans at work.
At the same time, IF the Singaporeans are NOT as good or not even HALF as good as others, then this insistence of 'Singaporean First' thinking and mind-set will be a self-deluding and unsustainable one.
Having said that, it is reasonable to EXPECT that Singaporeans WILL BE BETTER vs. foreigners as Singapore has one of the BEST educational system in the world, one of the BEST government in the world, etc. So, naturally Singaporean workers, be it blue- or white- or gold-collared, SHOULD be one of the best in the world too.
As for workers being replaced by automation and robots, it can be for some manual repetitive work where an emotionless machines designed, produced, programed and deployed will ACE it each and every time, human workers are at risk.
However, if that happened, perhaps PEOPLE will NO LONGER be focusing on earning a living but how to spend the surpluses generating by tireless machines for they human masters! This, will be another Future Trend analysis for the THINKERS to ponder over the tea leaf in the tea cup!
Bottom-line is: It will NOT be business as usual and the OLD MIND-SET must be destroyed before NEW desired habits can be developed!!
