Daily Lessons from Life 15 March 2016 - Un-Islamic to protect women? Costs & Benefits of Haze Control?

1. "Pakistan religious groups say law protecting women from abuse 'un-Islamic' - Reuter 15 Mar 2016

LAHORE, Pakistan: An all-parties conference convened by Pakistan's oldest Islamic political party and attended by powerful religious groups asked the government on Tuesday to retract an "un-Islamic" law that gives unprecedented protection to female victims of violence.

The Women's Protection Act, passed by Pakistan's largest province of Punjab last month, gives legal protection to women from domestic, psychological and sexual violence.

It also calls for the creation of a toll-free abuse reporting hot line, women's shelters and district-level panels to investigate reports of abuse and mandates the use of GPS bracelets to keep track of offenders.

Domestic abuse, economic discrimination and acid attacks made Pakistan the world's third most dangerous country in the world for women, a 2011 Thomson Reuters Foundation expert poll showed.

But since the law's passage, many conservative clerics and religious leaders have denounced it as being in conflict with the Muslim holy book, the Koran, and the constitution.

On Tuesday, representatives of more than 35 religious parties and groups came together for a conference called by the Jamaat-e-Islami party and condemned the women's protection law as un-Islamic.

"The controversial law to protect women was promulgated to accomplish the West's agenda to destroy the family system in Pakistan," read the joint declaration issued at the end of the concrescence. "This act ... is redundant and would add to the miseries of women.""

WHAT? Are you kidding me!!?? If the men respect their women a little bit more, treat them a little bit kinder, care for them a little bit responsibly, allow them to flourish and contribute their talent and strength a little bit more, maybe there is NO NEED for this The Women's Protection Act!!

To say that it is un-Islamic is like saying the Koran does not respect the women kind, supposedly HALF the human race and HALF the Muslims population! Can this be right? Surely NOT!!

2. "Haze episode cost Singapore estimated S$700m last year: Masagos - CNA 15 Mar 2016

LONDON: Last year's haze episode - caused by forest fires in Indonesia and exacerbated by a severe El Nino effect - cost Singapore an estimated S$700 million of losses, said Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli on Tuesday (Mar 15).

Mr Masagos, who is in London attending The Sustainability Summit organised by The Economist, stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation, among other issues like corporate and consumer responsibilities, to tackle the problem.

”We cannot have just one approach to address the problem. One of these approaches that we're trying to commit is the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore," he told Channel NewsAsia.

"In this aspect, we have been asking them to officially provide us the names of the directors of companies, as well as the locations where these fires have occurred, so that the companies can be put to task, particularly if the haze has affected Singapore."

Again, let me reiterate this 'broken record player': 'It is WONDERFUL to KEEP the FOCUS on the haze NOW as soon the expected haze season will be upon us and we MUST BREAK this mind-set! That this year there will be NO HAZE as every one in the enforcement fronts are doing their parts.

If it cost S'pore S$700m, SURELY if we just use S$70m to help the farmers who supposedly indiscriminately doing the 'slashed and burned' irrigating method to adopt MORE Eco-friendly planting techniques would be VERY USEFUL!

The maths are SO CLEAR that if the nations that neighboured each other have the POLITICAL WILL to eradicate 'haze from starting NOW, it CAN as it has the MONEY, the resources and the desire to see it through!

May we CONTINUE to 'be in-your-face' on this haze issue and inspire local NGOs in Indonesia to check-and-balance their 'slash-and-burn' neighbours from 'slashing and burning'!

May this 2016 be a BREAKTHROUGH year to kill the menacing annual HAZE!!
