SINGAPORE: Ah Boys To Men actor Noah Yap, 22, was on Wednesday (Mar 2) convicted of drug consumption and jailed nine months in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) detention barracks.
In response to media queries, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on Thursday (Mar 3) that the subordinate military court sentenced Yap, currently a Lance-Corporal serving his full-time national service, under Section 8(b)(ii) of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

“The Singapore Armed Forces adopts a zero-tolerance approach towards drug abuse. Servicemen found abusing drugs will be disciplined and rehabilitated,” a MINDEF spokesperson said.
Yap is well known for his role as I.P. Man in the local movie series Ah Boys to Men, directed by Jack Neo. He also acted in Neo’s The Lion Men and has a strong following on YouTube with close to 75,000 subscribers and close to 6.77 million views for his YouTube page."
Welcome news indeed. This will probably save his life, not just his entertainment career but his life!
I never did drug though when I was in secondary school, the neighbourhood I was staying in have a few drug junkies and even in my own school. Never did touch it for whatever reason and I am grateful for that. Substance abused and addiction can be a long term struggle and to kick the habit will required tremendous efforts, will power and all helps available.
At 22 years old, he has at least another 48 years to live to the ripe old average age of 80 years old. Does he want it? If so, he will succeed in kicking the addiction!
2. "3 remembrance sites for first anniversary of Lee Kuan Yew's death - CNA 03 Mar 2016
SINGAPORE: Three remembrance sites will be set up ahead of the first anniversary of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's death. He died last year on Mar 23, aged 91.
The sites will be at Duxton Plain Park in Tanjong Pagar, Istana Park, as well as outside Parliament House along the Singapore River. They will be open to the public from Mar 19 until Mar 27, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing, who is also Deputy Chairman of the People’s Association (PA).
Special photo panels chronicling Mr Lee’s life’s work will be set up at the sites, and PA will be managing the ones at Istana Park and outside Parliament."
It is almost 1 year since the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the 1st PM of Singapore. A year where his beloved PAP won resounding victory at the GE2015 that some attributed to voters inspired by his works towards creating a materially prosperous Singapore as one of the main reasons.
The NEW cabinet has been formed and the parliament commenced its work of building the 51st year of Singapore. It is respectful to reminisce, remember and honour the pioneering leaders AND the people who had done so much, made so much sacrifices, etc. It is EVEN MORE IMPORTANT to look forward and move on.
As it is the 1st anniversary, it is totally understandable to emphasise that it is not 'out of sight out of mind' and to commemorate this great leader. A controversial one to some quarters though no one can deny the material progress he and his team and this generation of Singaporeans had created.
As we CONTRAST the 2 news headlines I commented on today, it is not hard for the 'Ah Boy to Man' actor to realise how much he is wasting his life to be caught up in substance/drug abuse.
Alas, for some people of his generation, this comparison to inspire reflection and finding new resolve may be a totally alien tune.
That, I believe, is the challenge of the new cabinet. Working with people and winning them over softly softly. An approach that is going to be more time consuming. An approach that Mr Lee is famously known has no patience for!
