Wow! Quite a bit of happening today!
1. Earthquake in Sumatra at 7.8 magnitude with tremors felt in Singapore and a tsunami warning issued
I am holidaying in Phuket now and am glad to receive the news as IF there is going to be a tsunami, advance notices will be most welcome given the last one that hit Phuket and many parts of Indian Ocean besides the countries nearby where hundred of thousands perished!
Am glad also to learn that the tsunami warning has been withdrawn.
2. 'Benjamin Lim's case - Father disputed actions taken by the school - CNA 02 Mar 2016
SINGAPORE: Although a school counsellor had called his wife that day, the father of Benjamin Lim said the call was not to check on their son’s well-being.
Neither was there a discussion between the counsellor and his wife on whether it would be better for Benjamin to skip a school camp starting the following day so he could be with his family, the father added.
Mr Lim was disputing the actions taken by his son’s school before the 14-year-old fell to his death on Jan 26, as set out by Acting Minister for Education (Schools) Ng Chee Meng in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1).
“When the school’s counsellor called Benjamin’s mother at 4.13pm, he merely informed her that the school had a meeting, and Benjamin will be excluded from the camp. Before the mother could ask any further questions, (he hung up),” Mr Lim said."
This tragedy still raises questions that need answers. Not to fix blame as nobody could have anticipated the suicide UNLESS someone knows that background of the dead boy and his emotional state before and after he was charged with the offence.
The questions, hopefully, will help IMPROVE protocols and standard operating procedures that the MoE can think about just as the Police has committed to review their investigation process concerning young 1st time offenders, and those of 'taboo' nature.
3. Singapore emphasising Indonesia government's need to make those responsible for haze
A GOOD move and perfect timing. Put the SPOTLIGHTs on this issue BEFORE the 2016 falling into the SAME OLD SAME OLD patterns of 'we get haze when the winds change direction'! It is SIMPLY unacceptable to Singapore, and I am sure, to the Indonesian government as well.
4. Trump trumped his fellow GOP candidates on Super Tuesday!
This is getting EXCITING. Donald Trump, the outsider, the non-politician, shaking the Republican establishment to it core!
While I have misgiving about this 'entertainer', and his sometimes moronic behaviours and comments, it is a fact that HE had won BIG on Super Tuesday! If his numbers are to be believed, he supposedly get MORE GOP voters to come out and vote! And voted for him!! The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew would have been please that the 'undemocratic US Presidential election system' MAY just produce its 1st unorthodox, unpredictable, unimaginable President!
Let's see if this triumphant moment for Trump is for real or it would spurt the 'undecided' GOP voters to wake up to the reality (how ironic as Trump is known for the reality show: 'Apprentices') that Donald Trump MAY actually be their candidate and go on to beat the Democrat candidate!!
