Daily Lessons from Life 24 February 2016 - 1MDB's Stickiness, Clawing Back Bonuses from Bankers, and 'Back-dooring' iPhone!

1. "Malaysian anti-graft body advised to reopen case against PM Najib - CNA 24 Feb 2016

Malaysia's anti-graft body was advised Wednesday (Feb 24) by the Operations Review Panel to reopen its investigation into a case involving Prime Minister Najib Razak and state investment fund 1MDB."

Really sticky! A messy affair with the stickiness of a discarded chewing gum remaining irritating on the sole of the shoe or the pair of pant even after washing and cleaning vigorously.

Whatever it may be, it is a credit to the 'suspected check-and-balance system' of Malaysia that this saga has not been buried yet or refused to be buried without proper accountability to the public!

2. "Standard Chartered holds 'accountability reviews' for 150 current, former staff - CNA 24 Feb2016

SINGAPORE: Standard Chartered (StanChart) is holding "accountability reviews" for around 150 current and former employees around the world, and it may "claw back" part, or all, of the bonuses paid in previous years if these employees are deemed to be at fault for loans that have turned bad.

Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia on Wednesday (Feb 24), StanChart said the accountability reviews are still ongoing. It added that employees at all levels fall within the scope of these reviews and that penalties could include the reduction or cancellation of prior year incentive awards, as well as a reduction of current year incentives."

For the life of me, this is a miracle! A bank actually invoking the 'claw-back' clause! A simple logic with senior staffs making decisions that have mid- to long-term impact besides the immediate short-term.

It will be great to learn what is the outcome of this '1st ever claw-back' review!

One for accountability and Zero for greed!

3. "Solid support for Apple in iPhone encryption fight: poll - Reuters 24 Feb 2016

BOSTON: Nearly half of Americans support Apple Inc's decision to oppose a federal court order demanding that it unlock a smartphone used by San Bernardino shooter Rizwan Farook, according to a national online Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Forty-six percent of respondents said they agreed with Apple's position, 35 percent said they disagreed and 20 percent said they did not know, according to poll results released on Wednesday.

Other questions in the poll showed that a majority of Americans do not want the government to have access to their phone and Internet communications, even if it is done in the name of stopping terror attacks.

The responses to the privacy questions in the poll are similar to results from a 2013 Reuters/Ipsos poll, showing a consistent desire on the part of Americans to keep their phone, Internet communications and other data private."

It is TRAGIC to see that the debate has focused on the WRONG THING!

Of course, since I don't have access to EXACTLY what FBI asked Apple's folks to do, my position is based on:

a. it is SPECIALLY for this PARTICULAR iPhone of this PARTICULAR person who has been CONFIRMED, and filmed, of KILLING people randomly (or 'premeditated). Is it NOT POSSIBLE for Apple to do that or Apple has doubt that this PARTICULAR person's iPhone has been 'maliciously targeted' by the 'dark forces of government security agencies'?;

b. is the request asking Apple to 'hack' into this PARTICULAR iPhone and then HANDOVER the 'hacking software' to the FBI or just the 'information contained in this PARTICULAR iPhone of a murderer'? I can try to understand the 'protests' if it were the former. But if it is for the latter, I must agree with Mr Bill Gates, the co-founders of Microsoft!;

c. the distrust of the government and authorities is real for a big proportion of Americans, based on the survey, though it is likely that nobody care two hoots about this issue really. Based on the face value of this survey results, the people seems to believe that the government is the 'dark side' and will abuse such devices and tactics for sure! Glad that in Singapore, we have not reached this stage. May we never be as when the day does come, it means we have a government that is not trusted by its people, and it will be the end of Singapore really.
