Daily Lessons from Life 18 November 2015 - APEC and more ...

Paris Black Friday 13 Nov 2015 Attacks Updates - Fierce gun battle in northern part of Paris as the authorities closed in on the alleged 'Commander' of those terrorists who killed innocent people last Friday. Reportedly two were killed in fierce police raid targeting Paris attack commander and the authorities arrested seven people, while five police officers suffered minor injuries in the operation which turned into a seven-hour stand-off between security forces and a group of people holed up in an apartment. HOPE they 'fish something out of the captured suspects' to bring some closures to the families and friends of the dead!

"Xi endures lonely red-carpet APEC welcome in Philippines - CNA 18 November 2015

Philippine President Benigno Aquino promised to be the "perfect host" to all leaders attending a regional summit, but China's Xi Jinping endured a long and lonely red carpet welcome walk.

Aquino led the heads of the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group along a red carpet laid throughout the summit venue in Manila to a stage where they gathered for an opening ceremony.

Xi and Chile's Michelle Bachelet were in the front row alongside Aquino. But Aquino conversed only with Bachelet, laughing and chatting amiably, leaving Xi to plod sombrely alone through the sprawling convention centre with nobody to talk with.

The awkward walk, which lasted four minutes and seven seconds, ended when Xi entered the hall for the opening ceremony and an unidentified official approached him."

Supposedly something similar happened when Abe of Japan met President (Chairman) Xi when they met in Beijing a while back!

Lessons for me are:

1. as Host of APEX, a regional grouping, more courtesy could have been shown really to the head of PRC, the 2nd most powerful economy in the world, and a considerable military power too!;

2. President Obama supposedly also applying pressures on PRC suggesting that it should stop any further building of islands in the South China Sea. Again, this won't sit very well with the PRC authority. If is inconceivable that the head of state will give ANY CONCESSION in such a situation; especially when he is overseas representing a 'big and powerful nation'! His country folks won't let him EVEN if he is sympathetic towards whatever the issue may be!!;

3. NOW WHAT? Each side will just continue to do what they do UNTIL some 'minor' accidents bring the BIG BOYS together to try to sort things out. It will be ugly. From a small nation like Singapore and desperately wants to be seen to be 'impartial' BUT friendly to both parties, namely the USA and PRC, the most appropriate way is to settle the territorial dispute through the international court as Singapore had done in its disputes with Malaysia over the White Rock!

We will continue to be squeezed in between these 2 rocks for a while. Let's endure...
