Daily Lessons from Life 28 September 2015 - Our New Cabinet ...

"4th-generation leaders get key posts in Cabinet reshuffle - CNA 28 September 2015

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday that he is moving boldly to put members of the fourth-generation leadership in positions of heavy responsibility so that a new team can be ready to take over from him shortly after the next General Election.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the new Cabinet following the Sept 11 polls, where the ruling PAP won 69.9 per cent of the vote, PM Lee affirmed that his successor would be from this new Cabinet - if not, "something would have gone unexpectedly", he said at the Istana on Monday.

Newly elected members of the fourth-generation leadership Ng Chee Meng and Ong Ye Kung have been appointed co-Acting Ministers for Education, while returning MPs like Ministers Grace Fu and Masagos Zulkifli have been given their own ministries to helm for the first time."

While I am sometimes fairly critical of the PAP government, especially its relentless full-court press of every mistakes that opposition members make, I MUST give credit when it is due: that it is one of the VERY FEW democratic government that DELIBERATELY plan for succession!

My expectations of the NEW Cabinet:

1. be more coordinated and REALLY execute the 'whole-of-government' vision or strategy in the next 4-5 years instead of repeating the terrible mistake of 'transportation infrastructure lacking behind the craze of getting MORE foreigners to grow our economy at all costs'!;

2. some said Minister Khaw is a known problem solver as he was the guy in charge of the SARS Fight when he was in the MOH, and then his last stint as Minister of National Development fixing the outrage voices of young Singaporean couples complaining about the high price HDB flats; I am not sure he is GOOD at talking to the ordinary people e.g. his infamous suggestion that 'poor Singaporeans' should just retire to Johor Bahru. e.g. his ferocious attack against the AHPETC without admitting that there were troubles in the handing/taking over process. Also, the 'cooling measures' STILL have NOT brought the property prices down to pre-bubble time, maybe it is NOT the intention since many properties owners will be unhappy if prices dropped too much! Let see how he will fix the Transportation challenges;

3. it is MOST critical that the NEW members in the cabinet live up to PM Lee's expectations to be able to craft good policies and be able to convince the majority of the voters to buy into them and move ahead. Of course the execution must match the good policies too. Hopefully the well structured NEW CABINET with the 2 DPM and Minister Khaw as coordinating ministers providing mentorship to the new members get executed well. Minister Heng is back in his old haunt, Finance Ministry, is comforting though it is more than just running the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Let's see how things go. I await with great anticipation!
