Daily Lessons from Life 04 August 2015 - NSP new face Kevryn Lim draws comparisons to Nicole Seah

"NSP new face Kevryn Lim draws comparisons to Nicole Seah - The Straits Times 4 August 2015

SINGAPORE - Opposition leaders met at the National Solidarity Party's (NSP) headquarters at Jalan Besar on Monday evening to formulate their plans for the upcoming General Election (GE), but one figure in particular caught the eye.

NSP's new face Ms Kevryn Lim spoke to journalists outside the meeting about how she planned to champion transport and education issues if selected to contest, reported The New Paper.

With her youthful charisma and enthusiasm, she has quickly drawn comparisons from the media and online to Ms Nicole Seah, who was also a candidate for NSP in the 2011 GE.

Ms Lim, 26, a former model who is now a project director at events management and digital marketing firm EM.DM, has been spotted at her party's walkabouts in Tampines and Marine Parade recently.

When asked where she would be contesting, she said that it was up to her party's decision, adding that NSP had "prepared a lot" and hoped to avoid three-cornered fights. Ms Lim also admitted that she had been inspired by Ms Nicole Seah in her decision to join politics, Channel NewsAsia reported.

Ms Seah was 24 when she contested as part of an NSP team in Marine Parade GRC in the last election, which eventually managed to win 43.4 per cent of the vote. She left NSP in 2013 and has moved to Bangkok for work, and recently said that she would not be contesting in the upcoming GE."

Diversity, or more correctly, 'Variety', is the spice of life! And Diversity of potential candidates for Parliament of Singapore is definitely an emerging trend in the political landscape these days!

Lessons for me are:

1. political figures are no longer just coming out from a narrow spectrum of society! In more advance 'democracy', functioning or otherwise, like in Italy, you have a billionaire PM who simply loves the old Roman Empire way of chasing skirts and orgies. There were supposedly porn stars and hookers contesting in their election. Is Singapore political arena ready for such colourful personalities? Probably not. Let's start with an ex-model and a dresser who dressed 'young' and without any inhibition!;

2. Ms Nicole Seah in GE2011 was definitely a fresh breeze. She spoke well. Carried herself well. It was unfortunate that she did not continue to be in politics and her personal and professional life takes her further away from her original ambition of 'doing good and helping those citizens who need help', not that they are not getting helps from the government's many social assistances following the widening of the social safety net after the watershed GE2011 where it lost 2 full ministers and a touted 'potential office bearer newbie'! Will Ms Kevryn Lim be able to match or top Ms Seah in carrying herself and projecting the many positive vibes in the coming GE? It is ALL for her to show!! Good luck to her and she will appeal to the younger voters as she 'is' one of them!;

3. Are voters rational or emotional beings? I hope they are BOTH rational and emotional. To be able to think and decide objectively, the voter has to take the emotion out in order to assess candidates based on their actual past experiences and track records (factual evidences) and the ability to project the self-confidence, capabilities and compassionate when presenting himself or herself to the voters. The voter THEN put the emotion back in by voting on how EMOTIONALLY CONNECTED is he or she with THAT CANDIDATE!

Obviously, if the voter ONLY votes based on emotion, it is an electorate that is NOT mature yet. It means the 'democracy of the past 50 years' has not produced a citizenry that is capable of 'electing (not to even consider: supervising) a 1st World Parliament in a vibrant Global Nation!'

May we have MORE different type of GE candidates in the weeks to come!
