1. "Made-in-Singapore cancer drug advances to clinical trials on humans - CNA 16 July 2015
The drug, ETC-159, was developed in a collaboration between A*STAR and Duke-NUS, and is expected to target a range of cancers, including colorectal, ovarian and pancreatic cancers.
ETC-159 was discovered and developed through a collaboration between A*STAR’s Experimental Therapeutics Centre (ETC), Drug Discovery and Development (D3) unit and Duke-NUS since 2009. It was based on the discovery work of Prof David Virshup from Duke-NUS.
Prof David Virshup, inaugural Director of the Programme in Cancer and Stem Cell Biology at Duke-NUS, said: “As the drug candidate provides a targeted cancer therapy, it could potentially minimise side effects and make cancer treatments more bearable for cancer patients.""
ONE UP for the REAL foreign talent!
I am happy for the team and the REAL FTs who achieved this feast. Hopefully they find Singapore to be a worthy host and decide to convert to Singapore citizens. If not, at least they will contribute positively to develop their Singapore understudies and colleagues working and supporting their research work in Singapore!
2. Waves of Internet write up on the AGO Report highlighting issues in some of the government ministries, agencies and organizations under their respective care threw up interesting comments and spurt some creative 'pot shots' at the same!
'Harakiri' and 'Katana' (the Japanese Samurai sword) appearing with Minister Khaw reminded us of his famous words in parliament during the 'AHPETC' debate. Reason: some of the agencies and organizations under his ministry were cited for lapses.
Kudos must be given to the People's Association ("PA") for the swift formation of an internal investigation and the 'Committee' to review, correct and improve upon any deficiencies cited by the AGO. If only the WP team had done the same with the AHPETC situation when it was just AHTC in 2011? Maybe the initiative would had been changed?
Personally I like to see NO ONE exploiting such lapses as political capital in the coming GE as AGO is an important institution and is discharging its duties without fear and favour. It is to help spot issues, correct and improve any deficiencies. And, IF there were indeed any wrongdoings, to pass the facts and evidence to the Singapore Police Force to investigate, charge if appropriate, and bring to justice ANY perpetrators!
