The GOOD NEWS and then the BAD NEWS for today!
1. "Temasek portfolio value hits record high - CNA 7 July 2015
The state investment firm’s net portfolio value rose S$43 billion to a record S$266 billion for the financial year ending Mar 31."
This is WONDERFUL NEWS for Singapore.
Lessons for me are:
a. with S$266B, and a net return of 10% means S$26.6B available for Singapore government to DO A LOT OF social supports to help the 'disadvantaged people' to HELP THEMSELVES! Best of all, WITHOUT the need to touch the capital!!;
b. The rest of the government revenue streams like: personal income tax, corporate income tax, GST, etc can continue and be used to FUND other national expenses! This is SIMPLY a VERY NICE SPOT to be in;
c. So, be BOLD and use this 'passive income' to address: low fertility issue front and centre! Fund promising SMEs to be bold and innovative and REALLY grow into GLOBAL GIANTS!
2. "Faulty train could have caused power trip: LTA on North-South, East-West line disruptions - CNA 7 July 2015
For the first time, train services on the North-South and East-West MRT lines went down at the same time on Tuesday evening (Jul 7). SMRT got services up and running on all lines after 3.5 hours."
Well, you CANNOT win them all! After the fantastic news that Temasek has grown its net values to S$266B, the NS and EW lines went down at the same time today!
This after the SMRT CEO bagging a more than S$2m package. Doubled his compensation in 3 years after he left the Army to join SMRT Corp!
Lessons for me are:
1. where does the buck STOP? can the CEO be reasonably expected to DECLINE such a pay package EVEN if the Board and the Compensation Committee FEEL STRONGLY that he deserves it?;
2. how about the Board and the Compensation Committee members stand up and be counted? How do you justify such a pay package when the Company's train service performance sucked BIG TIME?;
3. how about the Government taking a stronger action against SMRT Corp since Temasek is supposedly a big shareholder? Surely SMRT Corp will be fined heavily again for this round of disruption! BOTH NS and EW lines downed at the SAME TIME will mean a lot MORE economical and productivity losses!
Hmm. It will be interesting to see HOW this BAD NEWS play out tomorrow!!
