Daily Lessons from Life 22 June 2015 - Protesters muzzled at Chinese dog meat festival

1. "KTPH Firearms discharged Updates - Man charged for unlawful discharge of a firearm in Khoo Teck Puat hospital shooting The Straits Times 22 June 2015

A 24-year-old Singaporean who allegedly snatched the revolver of a police officer at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital on Saturday has been charged under the Arms Offences Act."

Well, that 24-year old culprit is doomed. Probably will face the maximum sentence of death penalty for forcibly acquiring an official firearms and discharging it with the intent to hurt or kill in close quarter! Case closed!

2. "Protesters muzzled at Chinese dog meat festival - AFP 22 June 2015

YULIN, China - Campaigners protesting China's annual dog meat festival, which sees thousands of canines butchered and eaten, were forcibly dispersed by unidentified men Monday as they attempted to rally outside a government office.

About 10 animal rights activists unfurled banners outside the Yulin government headquarters, before a group of 20 men came and chased them off.

The city holds an annual festival on the summer solstice devoted to the consumption of dog meat, in defiance of an increasing backlash from animal rights activists.

The campaigners held signs reading "Crack Down on Illegal Dog Meat Trade" and "Punish Illegal Dog Transport", but the banners were quickly torn out of their hands by the unidentified group of men.

The slogans are an attempt to appeal to local government officials to enforce existing laws on health and administrative grounds, as there are no rules banning the consumption of dog meat. The majority of "meat dogs" in the country are stolen pets and strays, according to an investigation published this month by Hong Kong-based charity Animals Asia, though eating dog is unusual in most parts of China.

Activists, who say the festival is cruel, have in the past travelled to the city to hold demonstrations, sometimes buying dogs to save them from the cooking pots. One animal lover, Yang Xiaoyun, reportedly paid about 7,000 yuan (S$1,500) to save around 100 dogs in the southern city of Yulin on Saturday."

This is a perpetual tussle between the animal lovers AND the 'I just like to eat that particular animal' fellow human being!

Lessons for me are:

1. emotionally, dogs are NOT the NORMAL meat people eat. At least NOT in a place where they can get the more traditional meats like pork, mutton, beef, chicken, duck, etc. So, is there REALLY a need to eat dog to satisfy one's palette is a moot point! From a logical and scientific argument, dog meat offers NO GREATER protein or any touted nutrients than other NORMAL meats. So, it is JUST emotional desire to want to eat!;

2. whenever EMOTION comes into place, logic has NOT PLACE to stand. It is a mantra I have repeated many times over. So, the emotional needs of the 'dog eaters' need to be addressed. For the animal lovers, their emotional needs are: 'dogs are men's best friends. How can YOU eat a dog!!'. Who is right? For me, if you are NOT dying of starvation, if you have a choice, there is really NO NEED to eat dog meat! So, if it is about the money, easier to resolve. Alternative farming for the dog breeders and sellers. If there is no supply but demand is still strong, prices of dog meat will go up and up to only the truly wealthy can have it. YET, the truly wealthy will probably NOT want to be seen as barbaric since many probably keep some dogs as pets. Their children WILL be dead against them as parents to eat dog meat! Maybe the virtue cycle of stop eating dog meat can start from there!;

3. Or maybe this situation will never be totally eliminated as long as someone STILL consider dog meat to be uniquely special. Just like the Japanese killing whales for 'research purposes'. Some of the Western societies that kill hundreds of seals for foods and other materials. They will call this 'killing of animals' a custom, a tradition and a way of life to be preserved! In such situation, emotion is EVEN STRONGER. YET, if the government is serious. By making these acts a crime, SURELY the 'people' will come round to accepting that taking a high risk of being penalised by the laws for eating these animals when you have other alternative sources of meat is simple NOT VERY CLEVER! When pains are exerted on the offenders or violators each and every time they did WRONG, the minds will switch over and say: "Let's stop eating that dog or whale or whatever those crazy people said we should NOT be eating as it is too bothersome and troublesome!"

May that day come not a day too late for some of the cute poppies!!
