Daily Lessons from Life 06 May 2015 - German police detain 4 over planned attacks on Muslims, refugees

1. Nepal Earthquake Updates: "Quake-hit Nepal villagers take aid into their own hands". A matter of time when things do not move 'fast' enough in a disaster struck location. May these unfortunate problems get resolved quickly.

2. "Clean-up at Eunos' cockroach flat - The New Paper  May 06, 2015"

Great to learn of this effort by HBD and the Marine Parade Town Council to clean up the sitting room for now.

Q. can we have this NEWS in the newspapers for AS LONG AS the hoarding is in existence?

Otherwise, like the old man, Mr Lim said: "Mr Lim told Wanbao that he is thankful for the efforts of those who helped to make his flat cleaner and more comfortable to live in. But he is not sure if it will be a matter of time before the flat returns to its original state. Adding that his wife is unhappy about the spring-cleaning, he said: "I can't do anything if my wife continues to bring junk home."

3. "German police detain 4 over planned attacks on Muslims, refugees - Reuters May 06, 2015

German police have detained four people suspected of setting up a new right-wing extremist group calling itself the "Old School Society" with the aim of carrying out bomb attacks on mosques, Salafist Muslims and shelters for asylum-seekers.

"Investigations show the group's goal was to carry out attacks in Germany in small groups against notable Salafists, mosques and asylum-seekers' shelters," said the German public prosecutors' office in a statement. "To this end, from what we know so far the four people detained obtained explosives for possible terrorist attacks by the group," said prosecutors, adding that it was not yet clear whether they "already had specific targets or dates in mind".

They identified the four - all of them German citizens - as 56-year-old Andreas H., who was "president" of the group, 39-year-old "vice-president" Markus W., 22-year-old Denise Vanessa G. and 47-year-old Olaf O. German authorities only identify suspects by their first names and initials.

In 2011, Germany was shocked by revelations that a small right-wing cell, the National Socialist Underground (NSU), had carried out the murders of nine immigrants and a policewoman, as well as bombings and bank robberies. Security services and police had failed for a decade to detect the NSU's existence. Two members committed suicide after a bank robbery and a third suspect, Beate Zschaepe, is now on trial."

For a change, the 'other side' is striking back! Is this to be celebrated but to despair over? For me, it is clearly: 'to despair over'! How can 'a wrong right another wrong'?

Lessons for me are:

1. while the headlines are normally grabbed by 'the other evil force', let's not forget that 'another evil force' will rise to counter 'that evil force'!;

2. the TRUE good force is NORMALLY the neutral in extreme cases. Only when one maintains one's neutrality, and hence devoid of 'emotional responses and biases' can 'rationality' get a chance to be listened to. Reasons listened to with a calm and unemotional minds have a much higher chance of been understood! That is a fact. Hence, we always talk about: 'Get the emotion out BEFORE putting the rationality in!';

3. in Singapore thankfully most people are rational people. Even when provoked, the rushing to retaliate and make the 'bad guys' pay double or triple the price is normally controlled as MOST are afraid of getting into troubles with the laws. Laws that are transparent and with execution of consequences strictly carried out with efficiency and effectiveness. Of course, we are talking about normal circumstances. Will some people react recklessly in extremely emotional state? The answer has to be: quite likely. We just need to make sure that things will never be allowed to get to that 'boil-over' state!

May we have peace and stability so that the people can work on gaining prosperity and happiness without nary a care!
