1. Nepal Earthquake Updates - Beyond Kathmandu!
"About 100 bodies found in Nepal trekking village - Reuters May 05, 2015" - A sad development with the death toll now passed 7500. I guessed we will soon find out more about the devastation OUTSIDE the capital, Kathmandu. RIP to the dead!
2. "Singapore, Malaysia push back deadline for high-speed rail link - Reuters May 05, 2015"
A bit of a disappointment even though the task is very huge and complex as this high-speed rail link would have killed the air travel from Singapore to KL. Still, I hope it will be ready by 2021 as China has gone SO FAR ahead in high-speed train technology adoption, creation and implementation!
3. "Singapore is becoming more gracious: Study - CNA 05 May 2015
SINGAPORE: There has been a year-on-year upward trend of growing positive perceptions about kindness and graciousness in Singapore since 2013, this according to the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM)’s Graciousness Index this year.
The Graciousness Index has seen a rise from 55 in 2014 to 61 this year, said the SKM on Tuesday (May 5).
Overall, 44 per cent of survey respondents perceive our society of having become more gracious compared to 28 per cent last year. About 84 per cent rated their own gracious behaviour as either good or excellent and 69 per cent felt the same about the overall Singapore society.
Respondents also felt that Singapore has improved across the other graciousness pillars of being courteous, being considerate and showing appreciation.
The Graciousness Index is an annual study conducted over a six-week period from December 2014 to February 2015. Surveying a total of 1,850 respondents, it is commissioned by the SKM to track experience and perceptions of kindness and graciousness in Singapore, as well as study attitudes towards pertinent community issues.
SKM added that more than half of the respondents felt that it is important for parents to serve as role models, despite nearly 6 in 10 feeling that parents are not leading by example. However, close to 8 in 10 parents do agree that they can do more to inculcate the right moral and civic values to their children."
Hmm. This one will definitely be challenged as we observed:
1. 'The neighbours from hell' incidents are still been seen and reported. The 'Community Mediation Council' or some bodies that serve the purpose of mediation between feuding neighbours can report great improvement;
2. Yesterday, 'Clean Up Singapore Day' revealed that we still have a 'I can't clean up after myself' mentality and behaviours so we may want to put the champagne on ice until we can have a 'Cleaner Free Hawker Centre and Park'? since keep our environment clean willingly and without having to hire an army of cleaners would be a good index to measure: graciousness?;
3. the interesting results that said: "6 in 10 parents are not leading by example vs. 8 in 10 parents agreed that they can do more" would have given me some restless nights as basic gracefulness is best inculcated when the kids are young at home. Starting with respecting the elders, parents, grandparents and domestic helps if they kids are under 12 years old.
Still, the survey results showed an improvement. So, we are making progress. Keep working on it. As long as everyone is working on it. Or better still, exemplifying it through real daily behaviours, we should arrive. Hopefully before the high speed rail become a reality?
