"Leadership renewal is most important issue in next election: PM Lee - CNA 01 May 2015
SINGAPORE: The next general election is about forming an outstanding team of leaders who will take Singapore into the future, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday (May 1).
Speaking at the May Day Rally, he described leadership renewal as “the most important issue” in the next election.
“It’s about who will lead Singapore into the future – it is our future at stake, our children’s future,” Mr Lee said. “For if the government fails, what is going to happen to you, to Singapore?”
He said the work of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has put Singapore in a better place today.
“One reason for the strong reaction when Mr Lee passed away was because everyone knew that without him, what we see around would not be here today,” he said. “Mr Lee’s passing reminded people that exceptional leadership made a big difference for Singapore.”
“We might be small with only five million people, but other countries take us seriously; they believe that we can make a contribution beyond this island,” he added.
Mr Lee stressed on the need for Singapore to remain exceptional, and to do that, the Republic would need to have good leaders.
“Outstanding leadership brought us here, and outstanding leadership will take us forward,” he said.
He also remarked that he felt “aghast” at the suggestion that Singapore may no longer have to worry about national leadership, as Singapore already has a good system and that it could even “try out a different team”.
“If my team is weakened, would the government be able to deliver on what Singaporeans expect of us?” Mr Lee asked. “This place could not have been built, and cannot be kept going, without exceptional leaders.”
He then urged Singapore to offer their support to him and his team so that in future elections, a younger team of leaders would be ready to lead the nation.
However, he also said getting people “who are committed, with high ability, strong character, dedication and gumption” has been a difficult task.
“Suitable people are few, and these few are difficult to persuade,” he explained. Mr Lee added that he hopes to get “one or two more” people on board.
“We can never have an ‘A’ team that is too strong,” he said."
It is TRUE that exceptional leaders are hard to come by. The late ex-PM/SM/MM Lee is one of them. So are his 1st generation colleagues.
Lessons for me are:
1. with so much been credited to late ex-PM/SM/MM Lee, how much of the credit can be attributed to the 2nd and the current 3rd generation leadership become difficult! This is ironical!;
2. it will be prudent for the current generation leaders to start talking about what they have done, never mind the 1st and the 2nd generation as those were the past, so that confidence can be built in them 3rd generation leaders. It is quite obvious if we go by the last 2 general elections, the 3rd generation leaders have lost more popular votes than the 1st 2 generation leaders. This is a fact that cannot be denied;
3. of course the down trend does not mean that the 3rd generation leaders are not doing good. Maybe there are uncontrollable factors that contribute to the voters' disenchantment with the current political leadership despite that believing that they had done very well for the nation and the people.
It continues to bug many why the FEW good candidates DO NOT want to serve the nation despite the 'high compensation provided', a 'high compensation that continued to attract much scrutiny' by the voters. Of course, if potential political leaders only look at compensation, they would have been better compensated working as the CEO of the 3 local banks. Even if they are not trained in banking, they can learn and do it. Like many ex-civil servants and Singapore arm forces Generals had done.
So, clearly 'money' cannot be the main attraction to want to be in the cabinet or be a MP to serve the people, regardless who the voters voted for.
It will be wonderful to be able to figure that out so that 'the FEW that the PM feels can be exceptional political leaders WILL serve the nation and bring up into SG100. Otherwise, whatever good work that had been done by the pioneering leaders, the good maintenance work done by the 2nd and 3rd generation leaders AND Singaporeans will count for naught!
A moot question: can we have a political leader that can handle a parliament with more opposition MPs should this be a reality?
