Daily Lessons from Life 22-24 April 2015 - Catching Up ... Refugees in Europe, South Africans' Xenophobia? IKEA Saga, Fake Wellness Gure?

Being out of sort in the last few nights and did not keep the blogging going. So, a few catch ups before the weekend!

1. Refugees dying in seas off Italy

What would you do if you were the policy makers in Italy and Europe when faced with the wave after wave of refugees escaping persecution in their own countries risking all to flee to your 'promised land'?

It is SUCH a dilemma!! On humanitarian ground, I have to say: save them! On practical ground, the answer can only come after considering: 'Can we afford it?' and 'How to achieve the ideal situation of these refuges STAYING in their own countries and DEMAND the basic human rights that they are entitled to?'

As I mentioned in the past, unless we declare a Global Citizenship, each sovereign country has to be responsible for the well being of its own citizens! PERIOD!!

2. South Africans killing 'foreign workers, including PMETs' due to xenophobia?

I watched the brutal killing of the 'foreigner' on CNN and BBC while in the hotel room a few nights ago. It wasn't pretty. The photographer, a white South African, was not amused. The main reason apparently was  due to the 'locals' feeling aggrieved as they lost job opportunities to these 'foreigners' who will work for lower wages and longer working hours. While some pointed to some 'political forces' fanning such fears for the coming election!

Heaven forbid that Singapore ever come to this stage! Killing someone is DEFINITELY unacceptable! Perhaps those quick to label Singaporeans being xenophobia can STOP being 'trigger happy' and help to understand why some locals felt threatened by 'some foreigners - those who will contribute to depressing wages and taking jobs from the locals'!

3. IKEA LGBT Magic Act?

Seems like Pastor 'The Magician' Kong is stirring up some heat with IKEA Singapore partnering him with his Magic Show!

Some LGBT advocates supposedly 'slammed' IKEA for being hypocrite as it public declaim it is LGBT friendly and yet decided to partner with an 'infamous' strongly anti-LGBT magician-pastor! Of course this led to some commentators 'slamming' these LGBT advocates for being intolerant and wanting to impose their LGBT values and practices on the general public.

The counterclaims from the LGBT folks are: the 'slamming', may be this is an inappropriate description, was really just 'an expression of disappointed at the hypocritical IKEA for playing to both audience'! The LGBT folks DO NOT want to impose on the general public.

Alas, this debate will never go away. For me, it is BET to AGREE to DISAGREE. State your opinion WITHOUT attacking the other side will be PAR. This will NOT create any MISUNDERSTANDING.

Just say your piece. NO ATTACK on the other side. Can?

4. Fake Health Guru from Australia!!

"Australian blogger Belle Gibson admits faking terminal cancer" - Well well well. Is it surprising to ANYONE that she is a fake? Not really though the many 'fans' will find it hard, or harder, to admit that some of her claims were simply too good to be true!

Many commentators pointed to the 'power of number', 'personality cult', etc in this super fast, super scalable internet world. For me, it is all about MATURITY and prudence. Given that Ms Gibson is 'dispensing' UNPROVEN and UNORTHODOX 'cancer' treatment that 'supposedly worked', her advices COULD, and might already had, kill some 'believers'! This is freaking serious!!

YET, is it reasonable for any judges to ask: would not a reasonable human being will check the 'purported cancer cures' with 2nd and 3rd medical opinions? Alas, may be NOT since Ms Gibson was given up for dead by her 'supposedly' medical doctors! SHE found the cure that her MEDICAL doctors COULD NOT!!

Anyway, for the 'given up for dead' cancer patients, any 'cure' that works will DO!

With the publicity this case generated, hopefully, future patients will at least CHECK in after trying for a few weeks, max, with qualified medical doctors again!
