Daily Lessons from Life 02 January 2015 - Consultant charged with hurting maid by pulling out her teeth

AirAsia QZ8501 Updates Day 6: Some victims strapped in seats - The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network, Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network  Jan 02, 2015

30 bodies supposedly had been recovered thus far. There was a theory that the plane could have landed safely in the sea before sinking under the rough seas! This is doubly tragic for the surviving passengers and crews IF they, or some of them, were STILL conscious upon landing! Doubly sad!!

Before we KNOW IT, it is the end of the 2nd day of 2015. How unsentimental time is!!

"Consultant charged with hurting maid by pulling out her teeth - The Star/Asia News NetworkFriday, Jan 02, 2015

KUALA LUMPUR - A consultant pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing hurt on her Indonesian maid by pulling out her teeth with a pair of pliers.

Serene Ong Su Ping, 47, was charged with committing the offence on Meriance Kabu, 32, at a house in Persiaran Pandan 7, Pandan Jaya, between April 11 and Dec 20, 2014.

The charge, under Section 326 of the Penal Code, carries an imprisonment for up to 20 years and whipping. Ong also pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempting to murder the maid at the same place at noon on Dec 20 last year.

Sessions judge Unaizah Mohd then set bail at RM15,000 with one surety for both charges. She also ordered Ong to surrender her passport to the court and to report to the nearest police station at the end of every month. The court set Feb 5 for mention."

EVERY now and then we WILL get cases of Employers abusing their domestic helpers, or maids.

Lessons for me are:

1. is this a form of modern slavery? this Maids system? Especially the live-in type? Or am I too hushed, or worst, being hypocritical SINCE my children are grown up and we NO LONGER need to have maid or maids at home to help out?;

2. are the common traits or character flaws in these 'monstrous' employers? OR just that the 'normal human being' who SIMPLY could not, or do not know how to, work as 'bosses'? Is it 'nature' or 'nurture' that made MONSTROUS Bosses? Being a person who firmly believe that 'nurture can overcome nature somewhat', I cannot accept the 'natural character flaws' theory. Maybe potential employers have to get help on 'how to work with a live-in maid' IF living-in is the only alternative. e.g. anger management, expectations management, effective communication, etc;

3. even if the necessary 'training' being given to the potential employers on knowledge and skills suggested in item 2 above, the MIND-SET of the potential employers PROBABLY WILL determine if the knowledge and skills learned are practiced, and practiced consistently, or not! IF the potential employers' attitude towards live-in maids are:  they are human being, they are here to help, they need to learn and be given opportunities to make mistakes early and CORRECT and avoid/prevent recurrence of the MISTAKES MADE. Mutual respect will be a good place to start. Keeping firmly in mind that NO HUMAN BEING should be ill-treating another fellow human being as the BASE LINE. Perhaps then, the knowledge and skills CAN have a chance to be practiced and become a NATURAL behaviours!

Not sure what happened to the 'consultant' that caused her to behave SO SAVAGELY towards the maid in question. Hopefully she is proven not guilty as 'it' never happened. And if she DID do it, maybe she can get HELPS to rid the demons in her after serving whatever the sentence meted out by the court.

There MUST still be humanity in human being. YES
