Daily Lessons from Life 17 April 2014 - Lorry driver in Karpal's crash tested positive for ganja

The session with the client went well in my opinion. There is a sense of achievement as the room was filling will almost all Australians and they seemed to have responded reasonably well to a Singaporean leading them in the workshop.

Sad news on the Korean ferry incident with 290 passengers remaining unaccountable. The most depressing part, though many would mention that any loss of life is unforgivable, is that more than 70% of the passengers are young students on their way to the holiday island of Jeju from Incheon! Hopefully they will find some more surviving passengers. Any number will be better than none.

"Lorry driver in Karpal's crash tested positive for ganja - The Star/Asia News Network  Apr 17, 2014

IPOH, Malaysia - The Bukit Gelugor MP and veteran DAP leader was killed when the car he was travelling in collided with a five-tonne lorry near Gua Tempurung on the North South Expressway early Thursday

Initial urine sample of the lorry driver, 45, involved in the accident that killed Karpal Singh has tested positive for ganja.

Perak police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the initial screening showed traces of ganja but it was not conclusive.

"The second sample has been sent to the pathologist to confirm it."

A significant political opposition member of Malaysia and a significant loss for sure.

Lessons for me are:

1. some deaths are cheap, some deaths are deserving, and some are untimely and totally a waste. For me, this gentleman's death is untimely and totally a waste as he could have continued to push for political reforms and fighting the social unjust;

2. the lorry driver tested positive for drug on his 1st urine sample. The recent case in Singapore of a 'driver suspected of being on drug' (what type of substance was not disclosed I think) that resulted in the loss of 4 lives also highlighted the peril of such behaviour. I am not sure if the lorry driver is on the ganja to keep himself from over-worked fatigue or just for his 'pleasure' without regards for the potential danger to other road users besides himself. If it is for his own irresponsible pleasure, he should be punished severely. If it was to keep himself awake to get his job done, besides punishing him, studies of how long distance heavy vehicles drivers are doing their jobs will be helpful to flush out the root causes and tackle them in a focused and effective manner;

3. it remains to be seen how the opposition in our neighbour will respond to the loss of one of their most prominent and vocal advocates. The one who had been fighting their many law suits and court battles in the last few decades. His loss will be missed for sure. How quickly they can find another strong voice with equally solid legal qualification and experiences will be pivotal to keeping the public's positive sentiment towards the opposition.

Rest in peace Mr Karpal. You have fought your fights and time to rest.
