Daily Lessons from Life 04 April 2014 - News website Mothership.sg will register with Singapore's Media Development Authority

In Phnom Penh for work. 1st time here. Reminded me of HCM City, Vietnam, as I made my way from the airport to the hotel yesterday. Had a good session with the client and was most grateful that one of the client and her hubby drove me around to see the city and invited me to have dinner with their family members. Most kind and generous of them. A city to visit again - business or personal does not matter.

The Straits Times Friday, Apr 04, 2014

SINGAPORE - The company behind news website Mothership.sg said that it will register with the Media Development Authority (MDA), which will prohibit it from receiving foreign funding.

Mothership.sg is an independent news and lifestyle website with a sharp focus on local current affairs.

The concern that foreign funding or any form of foreign influence impinging on our site's activities, integrity or operations has never been an issue. The core team behind Mothership.sg are Singaporeans who care deeply about issues that affect our country and Singaporeans. It is also our policy to post the identities of our editors and writers on our website.

In the interest of our readers and after speaking to our stakeholders, the Mothership.sg team has decided that we will clarify our position regarding our registration with MDA as soon as possible.

We will accede to MDA's request to register under Section 9 of the Broadcasting Act, and to comply with all laws, rules, regulations and codes of practice that have been put in place to regulate broadcasting in Singapore.

Since we started operations 7 months ago, we were fortunate to receive much support from the local online community. In the month of March 2014, one in five Singaporeans visited our site.

We hope that our compliance will allow us to continue to serve the Singapore community, without fear or favour. We also hope that this move will bring us a step closer to obtaining full accreditation as a media in Singapore and help in our effort to become a viable and sustainable enterprise."

Good on them. I will be visiting them and perhaps add to them!

1. as long as one is focused on expressing one's views sincerely and without malice, it is alright!;

2. providing a non-establishment view is important especially when it is supported by solid reasoning and careful facts finding. Like they said: without fear nor favour to report news that are termed 'very sensitive'!;

3. with alternative news distribution, the persons or authorities that what only the people to read MAINSTREAM news which were a little bid bias will HAVE NO way to block. This is critical for a society that wants diversity and continuous progress so that the TRUTH cannot be just from the 'official' Singapore news channel!

Welcome mothership.sg!!
