"NUS ranked No. 1 Asian university - Edvantage Sep 10, 2013 Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) climbed six spots in this year's Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings to 41 from 47. The university has climbed 33 spots in the last three years and is also only one of the two young universities (under 50 years) in the top 50. Mr Ben Sowter, Head of QS Intelligence Unit, reaffirmed NTU's meteoric progress. He said, "NTU is amongst the most dynamic of world universities and going from strength to strength. NTU is among one of only two young universities in the QS Top 50 Under 50 to also appear in the world's top 50."It has achieved all this in less than 25 years. NTU is truly a university for the future and their inexorable rise in the QS World University Rankings reflects this."" Strange reporting with the headline proclaiming NUS to be No. 1 in Asia and the main body focused on NTU climb? Anyway, I SHOULD be happy with the 'achievement' by 2 of Singapore Universities. Yet, I am not really. Lessons for me are: 1. ranking and rating for universities are really quite pointless as far as I am concerned as my take has always being: If Harvard and Standard are SO GOOD, why would the USA be relying on 'printing UNLIMITED amount of money' to help itself 'back on its feet'. All the while NOT really making the TRUE culprits, the OVERLY creative so-called Bankers with those derivatives and whatever financial instruments?; 2. nevertheless, there are people who CARED about Ranking! So, as long as there a market for it, the survey results will keep coming! Someone will make some money doing this or distributing or sharing this. LOL!!; 3. NOW that NUS is Asia No. 1, perhaps it is HIGH TIME for the Government to SERIOUSLY look at WHY some of the BEST MNC employers in Singapore are NOT staffed with Singaporeans in the TOP Positions in their companies operating in Singapore? Why are we having so many Foreign Talent (Hopefully MOST are REAL instead of FAKE ones) heading even some of our own VERY Singapore companies e.g. DBS Bank? SGX? Some of foreign banks in Singapore? UNLESS, of course, the survey criteria is rubbish or our graduates, Singaporean ones are rubbish as the TOP students are foreign students? If this is the case, what is the government going to do about it? Does it mean our 'feeder' service of secondary and JC is deficient? Or our pure Singaporean gene pool is 'inferior'?? Worth pondering over this potentially 'long term' challenge?
