Daily Lessons from Life 28-29 June2013 - Labourer gets death for Dirang's murder

"Labourer gets death for Dirang's murder - The Star/Asia News Network Jun 29, 2013 JOHOR BARU - Odd-job worker Muidin Maidin was brought out of court crying and kicking in anger at photographers after he was sentenced to death for the murder of Nurul Nadirah Abdullah, better known as Dirang, a 4-year old child. High Court judge Datuk Abdul Halim Aman meted out the maximum sentence yesterday after ruling that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. The judge drew attention to the combination of factors which played roles in Dirang's death public apathy during the girl's abduction, irresponsible parenting as well as the characteristics of the killer." Most tragic of death. The questions raised could have applied in Singapore or any other communities where there are issues: 1. public apathy - the Judge is saying someone must have seen or heard the scream of the kid due the abduction and yet no one decided to act. I don't know if this offender is a big time terrorist in that part of the world or not as it is no uncommon to have good people being cowed into submission and/or apathy when they are insecured themselves. If so, what could be the reasons? That the lawful enforcers like police and grassroot leaders did not or could not bring the laws on this animal before this crime is proven beyond any reasonable doubt?; 2. irresponsible parenting to ask the kid to go buy something scribbled on a piece of paper. This one showed irresponsible act by the parents initiate. Yet when one considered that it is in broad day light, and if the neighbourhood is one of peace and harmony, it is not unimaginable that the parents become complacent and send the kid out to buy some daily necessity for the family. Still, the actual abduction on the night must be traumatic for those who heard it. What were they supposed to do? Be nosey or be a good neighbour and not poke their noses into "others' affairs". A tough call; 3. the characteristic of the murderer - the act is unforgivable. Yet why would he did what he had done has no simple answers. The fact that his DNA was found in the dead kid's vagina and anus shown that he is an animal. Of unsound mind that should be eliminated from the face of the earth so that he can no longer harm another innocent child. It is about making safe. It is not about human rights. A life for a life is a fair deal. A sad tragedy that force everyone to re-think our priority and what is the right thing to do. Punishment by death in this case is the right thing to do.
