Channel NewsAsia - Volunteer police officer charged with asking for sexual favours:
SINGAPORE: A volunteer police officer was charged in court Thursday with asking for sexual services and accepting money while carrying out anti-vice activities.
Ng Wan Fu Ivan, a Volunteer Special Constabulary, faces three charges of allegedly asking for sexual favours from three female Chinese nationals between May and December 2007 so as to not arrest them on suspicion of prostitution."
Tempting for the 26-year old. Too bad for him he was caught. He asked and he got what he wanted. Then the consequence that he probably did not bother to think about if he get caught!
Lessons for me are:
1. with foreigners who are used to using sex or money or another other means to get with the law enforcement authority in their home country, they will try to do the same here. Singapore law enforcement authorities like police, custom services, tax, environmental hygiene inspectors, etc MUST heightened their awareness of such temptations. They must guard against following into this trap!;
2. law enforcement officers must know that the punishment or disciplinary action against them for breaking the laws they are supposed to keep is severe and the sentencing authority MUST make an example of any such violations as Singapore's stellar reputation of 'no corruption allowed' cannot be tarnished. It is one of the few things that got going for us!!;
3. Now that the VC was caught and sentenced, the attention must turn to the givers of favors! They too must be made to know that their 'self-protecting act' that work well in their home country will NOT work in Singapore. And if they get lucky 1st and then get caught on the 2nd time, the punishment for them must also be merciless and out to 'make an example of them'. It has to cut both way.
May Singapore authorities be aware of the temptation to its employees and reinforce the training on how to resist such temptations. It must also refresh and re-emphasize the severe consequence of falling short of Singapore's high standard expected of its civil servants, including the police, the inspectors, and custom officers.
