I lost the earlier comments on the above story so I will just go for the key points.
Lessons for me when a CEO of a giant oil company coming off one of the worst man-made disaster on earth and having a 'regular' outing with his son on his yacht and got the Chief of Staff of the White House saying: To quote Mr. Tony Hayward, he has got his life back!
1. when you are in that kind of situation, you CANNOT be so CARELESS. Is it fair that your 1st day after the tiring and thankless task of facing the attacks by Americans in the street and by those politicians at Capital Hill vilifying you and your company that you are just living your normal lifestyle! Well. The simple answer is: NO. The complex answer is: you must be aware of your position and that public scrutiny in such a huge media event just made you a target for anyone who want a piece of you with their axes sharpened! It comes with the territories! Too bad;
2. like some skeptics said: Tony will probably not get a chance to work in the PR field after his BP stint! In media mad or dominated USA, Tony should had been more sensitive about this. It is just unacceptable for a man with a global giant not to be aware of this. So, I think he got it coming. He deserved the lashing. Really!!;
3. Will Tony's presence at the center of the disaster help? Of course NOT. He is not an EXPERT in this area. In fact, no one is as this has no precedence! Yet, as the figure-head, he has to be there. Passing the operation to his Top BP representative does not absolve him from being aware of the impact his 'private-public' behavior will have on BP's image. Again, he has failed in this aspect.
May BP capped the leak soon as this is not really about Tony Hayward but how to stop this disaster soon. It is about saving Mother Earth from the mistake made by men!
