Daily Lessons from Life 29 January 2010

"Criminals raping Haiti quake survivors - Fri, Jan 29, 2010 AFP

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Haiti's police chief said Thursday that bandits were preying on vulnerable earthquake survivors, even raping women, in makeshift camps set up in the capital after the disaster.

'With the blackout that's befallen the Haitian capital, bandits are taking advantage to harass and rape women and young girls under the tents,' national police chief Mario Andresol told reporters."

This is the last thing you want to hear in a disaster struck nation. It showed how low down some human beings can become. These are not bandits but beasts that MUST be punished in the most merciless manner if found guilty after a fair trial!!

Lessons for me are:

1. the most severe disaster will test how human being really behaved. Those with principles and a basic human feeling will sympathize and render help if they can while those who are evil will betray their pretentious selves and revealed their true beastly character!;

2. I am not sure what is the traditional culture of Haitian on the subject matter of sexual assaults on women and men and girls and boys. Is it really a world where the 'strong and powerful (with a gun maybe)' can do whatever they want in peace time let along during this stressful and fighting for survival time? How can anyone preyed on fellow sufferers of the devastating earthquake do this? It just wrenching to learn of such behaviors!!;

3. the police talked about this crime against the women and girls, I wondered what have been done to these criminals?

Sometimes it just stressed me to think that human beings are capable of such despicable actions. I know it is possible as it had been done before during WWII or other war zones. But in a disaster zone that was your home? I have to remind myself HARD that it is possible!!
